Can you believe it? I want to see how many out there are going to call this camera unprofessional considering how much the e-330 was criticized for it.

Another Olympus idea or invention that Canon feels compelled to copy. The biggest giant on the block can't think for themselves. Canon must think they get some award or something for having the first "professional" camera with live view. Hope they are happy. They'll only be better till the new Oly comes out

I never criticized it. Since I do a lot of tethered shooting, this is a desirable feature, though not enough to make me switch systems. One crit I have of Canon, is why is this on this camera? This would seem more suited to a full frame 5D or 1Ds type of camera. Kudos to the 4/3 conglomerate for forcing Canon's hand.

So Canon can judge its worth? If the pros use it and like it, then everybody needs it and shall pay more for it. If the pros don't use it and like it, then everybody else needs it and shall pay for it because Canon needs to recoup some lost revenue.....

Looks nice, though it'll be way to heavy and way to costly for me. I wouldn't worry about other brands adding these features - they're all useful. What is annoying are the brand-loyal fans who knock features, but we're not like that here are we

Me too. I think this feature would make much more sense on whatever the 5D replacement will be. The 1D is obviously targeted at action/sport shooters and I can't see a use for a manual focus only live view mode in that context, particularly given how LCD's perform in sunlight. I can easily imagine potential buyers of this camera seeing this feature and going "WTF?"

Never had or played with the Oly LiveView, so maybe you can verify... I know there are two modes, but don't know the limits of each...
When using, can you use Auto Focus? The Canon site lists their Focusing in LiveView as Manual, so just curious.... |

Seems like Canon are offering the equivalent of Olympus's Live View B. This is a manual focus mode (well nearly - Oly did a firmware update that brought the mirror down to get an AF reading). The great thing with this mode is that it shows exactly what the sensor sees. Brilliant for adjusting DoF, lighting, focus etc. I've always hoped that the new Oly E-x will just do LV B as it doesn't compromise the viewfinder. Seems like Canon got there just ahead of them
.I agree with Kyle about who this is aimed at - 10 frames/sec + the slow LV seems either mixed up or they're appealing to all types (nothing wrong with that). I'm sure the next Olympus pro level camera will be below the Canon in price (well I can hope), and will have the features I'm most keen on - mode B LV, uncompromised viewfinder, better AF, inbuilt stabilisation. If not, they've missed the boat again . |

I'm coming round to the conclusion that there are lots of people like that. Crazy. The top line film cameras were, what, around £1000/$2000? You'll never get anything digital at full retail around that price that would compare in build quality. Seems like digital sensors prevent us coming to our senses.

I think the price is quite reasonable given what they give you. Dual digics.. that can't be that cheap. 10fps- for those who really need them, it's there.
To be honest, what I am fearing is the e-3 costing in the neighborhood of $2,500-$3,000 USD... considering what it will probably have and using the Canon as a reference. - Raist |

E-3 at $3000 would be a bargain for me. That's around £1500, which is less than the E-1 4 years ago. Not sure how it would sit in the market. I guess slightly less than a current 5D, more than a D200. I'd personally expect it to be around £1999 in the UK, which is $3999 in the US but I'm sure it'll be less than that over there. We always suffer from price inflation.
Just gives me an excuse for a quick trip to NY. Pays for itself . |

We send a letter to Olympus explaining the correct logic in the pricing structure.
Half the FPS of the new Canon = 1/2 the price 20% less pixels = 20% less cost. 50% less buffer capacity = 50% less cost. and so on... Of course, all these are cumulative. No fair picking just one. So if they have 5fps, then the new Oly is $2000. If they also have 20% less pixels, then the price is now $1600. It is quite simple. ![]() |
