Default Adobe ACR/Lightroom 2/DNG converter now supports e-420/e-520

And with that, I confirmed the workflow:

DNG converter-> DNG -> Lightzone
DNG converter-> DNG -> Aperture

Works.

I've also confirmed with Adobe that LR 1.x will NOT be supporting the E520 (ie there will be no new releases.)

If I was them, I wouldn't either. I'd make you upgrade to LR 2.0, simply because it is way better....

I agree with Mr. Pickels but more than being better or not is the issue of supporting different releases of product code.. usually when you upgrade to a new major rev, you do abandon support other than some bug fixing for the earlier ones.

That's a bit of a strech. I upgraded for other reasons, but if I stuck to 1.4, I would not feel stuck. It did what I needed it to do.

It would not take much effort for Adobe to keep the acr up-to-date. Their lack of support for a product that is only a year old does not ripple confidence in them.

It's that reason I dropped Apple. They still don't support any of my cameras, since I got rid of my D-70s. They stopped supporting my (at the time) 1 year old laptop for Aperture. I was so happy I went PC and baught lightroom. I was a mac user for 15 years; oh well.

It's never a good desision to stop support for a product too soon, no matter what product you make or who you make it for.

Which laptop model was that one? I am assuming some kind of G4.

Yeah, their last G4 laptop. I now sport an AMD Quad. Thier "intel offerings" lag to far behind to be charged a premium price, along with the "$130 OS Soak" every year.

Thay can say what they want about the greed of Mr Bill. Mr Steve has always been much worse.

I would say when they hit the Intel machines, the perf/price didn't lag for a while. It was quite good. Right now as in right very now, I find it is definitively lagging- apparently Apple is aware of this as there are heavy rumors of price drops soon with their next rev. BTW, if I understand correctly Aperture does run on the latest G4 laptop. As for the "OS Soak" I see it as something you don't have to do - that is to upgrade. There are certain "inflection points" though where there's a big jump. But thinking that to get all the same functionality we are talking about a $300 Vista Ultimate, $130 in 3 years doesn't sound that horrible if you were upgrading on a yearly basis.

Just my opinion on some of the things you mentioned, don't mean to argue, I can see pros/cons to either decision (and thanks for sharing your opinion/take/needs on it). I have been eyeying LightRoom 2 and it's just 2 things away that prevent me from a switch. I still like Aperture but Apple needs to support it quicker as far as RAW support goes. Also the quality of the RAW conversion is now lagging behind LightRoom, at least for the Olympus cameras I have seen it used.
