Default (C&C) Images at the Getty Museum yesterday...

These were taken with the e-420, the Leica F1.4 25mm (50mm equiv). All jpegs, tweaked for contrast, except the very last photo with the white bars.

Comments & critique, welcome.

Raist,
Shooting in Southern, sunny California in the middle of the day(unless you have Hollywood equipment <gg>) is quite a feat; in all that contrast, which you seem to want to challenge, came out with no blowouts; impressive; nice shots; I remember I was at the Getty 20 or so years ago and it was bright; are you using the new auto shadow feature ? How does it seem to work ? Compared to the 410 or 510?

Love, Vjim

Thanks for the comments. It turns out it wasn't the middle of the day, but between 4 pm and 5:30 pm (though since it's summer, there's plenty of daylight). That said, I meter carefully with the spot meter. I did a couple of blown out mistakes so I adjusted accordingly. The spot meter of the 4/3rd cameras is accurate in some situations but not so accurate in others, but overall if you have large regions of the intensities you want to sample, it sort of is. It' also the issue of how to interpret the + and - ev's values you get reported to map it.

I did burn an area in one shot. The one of "reminds me of Alice" I did burn the stone. In the one with the people with the diagonal shadow I did a cropping where a blown out stone to the right side got cut.

That said, I try to get my exposures right. I don't think I used the auto shadowing feature, but in many situations that works well. But you have to know when to use it and when not. What I mean is, sometimes you do want the more contrasty look to get pure blacks, etc. The other thing is getting an idea how it will behave.. only practice.. I have noticed some subjects seem more unpredictable than others and you have to think about it as a "hint" to give to the camera when doing the jpeg more than an absolute amount. If you shoot in raw, shadow adjust really doesn't apply unless you develop in master/studio with the raw settings.

Raist, Hmmm, maybe the 420 is a viable option.

I love the Getty! Thanks for reminding me. Hope to spend a couple of days there next time I am out that way. Last time, had a young couple ask me to "take our picture" at almost the same place and perspective as your #2 shot.

Your shot of the couple on the tram makes me want to know "the rest of the story." I keep going back to it.

Okay, your next assignment--inside "the Blue Whale." The lighting and reflections in that place drive my imagination wild.

Raist, The Blue Whale is the Pacific Design Center over at 8687 Melrose. A very much photographed building, but the neat stuff is inside.

Some excellent shots there Ricardo. I especially like the first two sets. Good eye on the angles. I think these are the strongest shots you've posted on the camel so far.
