It's alright - it finally finished after a couple of days . One thing I should have done but didn't was turn off time machine - I suspect that it was backing up quite large database/library files generated by Aperture in the thumbnail/previews process...

Anyway, I've used it a little bit last night. It does seem a little more sprightly than the last time I used it, though I'd still put Lightroom ahead. The spinning beachball crops up a lot more in Aperture. I miss being able to double click in image to toggle between 100%, size of screen, and thumbnail like in Lightroom. Can that be customised in any way?

I believe there is. Ever thought of reading the manual? It's located under the help menu.

Hmm, I don't have any manual under my help menu, but thanks for the suggestion. If there is a way to customise how double clicking affects the image size up to 100% then I'll be very happy. It's such part of a frequent command sequence I use in Lightroom. I notice that lots of keystrokes can be customised so maybe someone has already done a 'Lightroom' keymap. I'll do some research...

Sorry, didn't read this until now.

If you double click it changes from view to browser + view.

If you want full size just hit "Z" once.

And yeah there are many ways to customize it, don't know if you can customize the mouse.

PS: You can make Aperture work with two monitors- one monitor with a full preview of your adjustments, the other with browser + adjustments

PSS: You need to click on "preview" on the lower right of the icon set when you have the viewer + browser enabled. This makes it MUUUUUCH faster when browing the thumbnails and photos. Remember to click it again to load a photo.

Default Even more speedup for Aperture- tips!

Bagelturf - Aperture: 32 Ways To Speed Up Aperture | None | Bagelturf

I also discovered you can delete project previews, control previews being generated only per project, per rating, per imported new projects.. I am deleting them all.. this will save me tons of hardisk space.

Another speedup tip- rebuild Aperture's database by pressing option + command on Aperture's boot... I haven't tried this and of course they recommend you backup your Aperture library first (I have all my images externally referenced so in theory shouldn't be that much ram but I discovered I was using a whopping 30 gigs- so I am deleting previews to see how much I get back.)

Man, I didn't think about this. This must have an effect. Everytime Aperture creates *anything* spotlight is indexing. Some people talked about turning spotlight off with some utilities but seems this is behind Apple's back (read: potential unstable state).

It's best to go to the spotlight preferences, and click on the private tab, then drag all your hardisks in the "do not search." When you are done, and want spotlight to work again, take them out of there. This will kick in some indexing sessions but spotlight indexes fairly fast. I am trying this now. Apparently spotlight is very efficient but there's still a hit somewhere I bet.
