Depth of field effect can be seen through liveview, so I would just get things ready with the lens wide open, then close down for DOF preview and then shoot.
I didn't even seem to have problems with DOF preview before having liveview, this is probably because just looking into the dark viewfinder to have an idea is not as bad as getting things ready for the shot with a dark view finder.
