Default M$ Vista and .orf files

Just in case any Vista users hadn't noticed, but the new OS supports viewing of .orf files via a small download courtesy of the Olympus site.
XP was such a pain in this respect as it was so hard to browse the thumbnails without clicking on each one, especially when using PS. Eventually though I just downloaded dpmagic (community edition) which worked on them OK.

IrfanView will view them too. There is some Windows XP add-in from Windows themselves that views them too, I think.

But I convert my ORF's to DNG's anyway (mucho smaller, with no loss)...

I installed the Olympus RAW file update for Vista. Not sure what's going on, but has anyone else noticed a lot of stepping when editing E-1 RAW files in Photoshop/Lightwave/Silkypix (and no doubt others) on Vista? It's like the colour pallette is reduced to 256 colours or something.

I didn't actually notice any stepping with my E-300 files. It's of no concern now as I've blown off Vista and gone back to XP - it was just doing my head in with all those UAC screens and admin options. Even when I turned them off they still came back to plague me in another form. Many apps, though shouting 'Vista Compatible', quite clearly are not, and I still reckon Vista was pushed out prematurely before being properly tested.

I'm with you on that one Malakor. I've disabled the nag screens but still finding a few quirks. I won't go back to XP as it's not my main PC, but it's not one I'm going to actively use for photo work.
