Default Review of the L1

Quite a detailed review of a production model can be found here.

I'm not tempted myself, but I wonder if my wife would like one....

Looks like a nice camera. Too bad it's still rather expensive for what you get...

It is. I hope they don't try and use the Leica thing to keep it artificially inflated in price. I doubt if Pany could get away with that type of marketing.

Ugh, "the Leica thing".

I like Leitz optics, but seeing as the cost of a new Leica body has gone from $2200 to $3500 (with a price increase in optics to come) I doubt I'll ever bother getting my own. I put some rolls through my late grandfather's Leica M3, and I think that's enough Leica fun for now. There is the "Leica Student Assistance" program for discounted products, but even then, I need to eat. Also, why should I invest in a Leica MP and Leitz glass when my Nikon FM2 with 20mm f/2.8 AIS and 105mm f/1.8 AIS will get the job done just the same?

But you're missing that little red dot! I guess you could do it yourself with a little yachting paint and a very fine brush .

The MP doesn't have the red dot on it, as it's essentially an M3 with the newer loading system. The (extended) family M3 predates the red dot (it's only a few years younger than my father). I should probably add the red dot to the M3 first (and watch my uncle have a heart attack), LOL
