I forgot to ask, but since it was brought up again, using the 1/4 CTO gel.... do you check the WB when you use it? Or do you know from experience that the 1/4 is the one? Or so you sometimes have to tweak what you did use a bit in post?

Nice shot, Nick. I like the rustic look and the background going to a slight blue. I assume WB was set for gel (tungsten) and fill light w/o gel turned blue. Jim

In answer to your question Mr Pickles, no I didn't exactly know from experience that it would be the right gel to use but usually I start with a 1/4 or a 1/2 (you have to start somewhere and usually less is more) and see how it looks, and then yes usually a tweak in post.

Normally Jim I leave WB set to automatic and then pick a neutral point when I first get the image in to Lightroom, David Hobby (Strobist blog) is running some great tuition at the moment on coloured gels and WB shift not sure if you are familiar with his posts.
