I was wondering if the Canon Elan (1991) would be a good camera to own?
Thanks for any replies I get. Ed __________________

The Elan was an O.K. camera. What are your requirements-needs-for a camera? What will it take to acquire? If memory serves me correctly, the Elan your speaking of had standard TTL type flash. The Elan 2/ 2E had E-TTL 1 w/high speed sync and the Elan 7N/NE has E-TTL 2 flash w/high speed sync.If you must spend money,I would get the most current, the 7NE.

The Elan had a problem with some foam piece or something oozing a gooey substance on the shutter blades that rendered it useless. So I would be concerned about one that old. I did have one and got a lot of use out of it, but eventually it did fail for that reason.

![]() I haven't heard of the Elan 2 being aflicted with "sticky shutter": that was the problem with the EOS 630 (another camera I have and which is going strong as well). Check out the following link: EOS Documentation Project- EOS 50/50e Elan II/IIe Operator's Manual |

I have an Elan 7 as well and have enjoyed using it. You'll love the 7fps in drive mode and if you get the battery grip, it feels sooo much better in your hands, especially if you're shooting vertically. I didn't want to bother with the eye controlled focusing because I thought the technology had to go through a few generations before it would really be reliable. I'm sure it's much better on the 7NE.

Well, I decided to get an Elan 7, but I ended up with an Elan 7E instead ( I need to read descriptions better).
Any way, it came with the battery pack at least so that was a major plus. I tried to set the ECFabout 5x, but being as I wear glasses, it was pointless. Now I just need to get a short roll of film (12 shot) for testing purposes and I'll be in business. Thanks to all who responded. Ed |

The original model was the only one that had the issue Second Focus pointed out.All succeeding models in the Elan series were/are good dependable cameras. The current Elan 7NE has very good reviews, not to mention high speed sync and E-TTL II.I have considered one as a replacement for my old ,favored A2.

Well, there won't be any photos from this camera. The film compartment door catch BROKE OFF when I put the film into the camera, and closed the door.
![]() ![]() UPDATE: It was not the part that is on the door itself, it is the part on the body that you have to press down to open the back. I emailed the guy I bought it from, but I figure I'm stuck with it now. Who would want a broken, useless camera back. ![]() Oh well, chalk up another one to experence. ![]() UPDATE 2: I found the part I need to fix the camera on ebay for less than 13 simolans. Also I can replace it myself. I called a place and they wanted 45 bucks to fix it. |
