Default YASHICA DENTAL EYE

I've seen quite a few YASHICA DENTAL EYE cameras selling dirt cheap on Ebay. Does anyone have any expeirence with one of these cameras? It seems like a inexpensive route for a close up lens with built in ring flash.

I haven't used one but it looks interesting for macro. The flash is in the lens itself, and the lens is fixed to the body. The downside is you better like that lens, since you can't change it. The original version had a 50mm lens, and the later versions went to a 100mm lens.

Yashica is a well respected camera manufacturer. I imagine it is a decent camera. If it stands up to day-to-day use at a dentist office, it should work for macro.

Several years ago we used one of these cameras in the clinic to photograph skin lesions. It was a simple set-up and worked reliably and well. I don't recall exactly what image magnification you could get but I estimate around 1:2.

Cheers/Mike

I currently own a Dental Eye and a Dental Eye II. I absolutely love these two cameras. The DE uses a 55mm f4, while the DEII uses a 100mm f4. I paid $60 for the DE and $100 for the DEII, both were well worth that and I would have gladly paid more. They both have 2 short commings:

1. the lenses cannot be removed

2. they can be used in the macro focusing range only

As for their magnification capabilities, they can both go down the 1:1. The DE's min is 1:10, and the DEII's is 1:15.

Power: DE: 4AAs DEII: 2CR5 Li or AC adaptor
Film Speed Setting: DE: manual(64 to 1000) DEII: auto DX(50 to 400)
Film Advance: DE: manual DEII: auto
Film Rewind: DE: manual DEII: manual
Flash: Both: built-in ring flash, hot shoe DEII: pc
Tri-pod Mount: DE: yes DEII: no
Remote Release: DE: Threaded release cable DEII: 10s() timer

Also the reason I paid so little for these cameras is that there is something wrong with each of them. None of the problems really constrict the functionallity of the cameras too much. I just can't put my DE on a tripod, and it's a little tough to focus my DEII.

Anyway, if your really into macro, and love film, I highly recomend any of the Dental Eye cameras.
