What flash (used) for Canon Elan II - PhotoCamel

I'd like to get my dad a flash, probably used, for his Elan II. I found a 540 EZ for $175, no case and no manual, Also one for $189. that has the case. Those are both in local camera stores. Any other brands that will do the job? If so could you tell me what model ect... that I'd be looking for. Would you trust buying this type of thing from EBay?
