1st time using a ring light, All handheld. Wanted to see how well it does full length.
Note not much PP on these. PS I hate PP hence want to be able to do Click and Post shots. PS Ring light was about 5lbs + power cord. 1. _DSC7723.jpg 2. _DSC7725.jpg 3. _DSC7730.jpg 4. _DSC7736.jpg 5. _DSC7738.jpg 6. _DSC7754.jpg __________________

I've never used a ringlight, however, I would say that the lighting is not very flattering to your model. The lighting is too straight on and therefore looks flat. It's also harsh. I would set it up on a stand and move it either left or right of camera to add depth. The one shot I like is the last one. I think your model is pretty, however, the flat lighting shortens her face and broadens her nose. You need to adjust the lighting to create some depth/shadows that will elongate her face and narrow the nose.

As per the class teacher , he told us that with the ring light you can not move back or forward , you use a ZOOM to change the framing (this is actually the only light that he also uses a ZOOM on). If you move back or forward you must re do the light measurement. Also I was glad we were limited to a 5min shoot each with the RING as it was getting heavy to hand hold. I also increased my shutter at the end to 1/200 in case of extra camera shake.

This Ring light is totally new to me. One of the other students in the class wanted to try it out. And since I shoot full length model shots I wanted to see how a ring light works in that type of shot.
I think the only shadow a ring light can cast is that which you see behind the model. You will notice that it is larger then the model and is on both sides of her. Also you have to realize that the lens is surrounded by the flash ring. http://k53.pbase.com/o4/41/354741/1/...0.IMG_3102.JPG Above is very close to what it looked liked. However we handheld it, which is not easy that ring is very large and heavy. The Ring light was our only light source on these shots. There was ambient light however since we were shooting at 1/125 at f/8 to f/11. Also I think a ring light is not meant to cast any shadow on the face as the light is coming from all sides. |

I applaud you for expanding and willingness to learn and shows us your growth. I don't know much about ring lghting myself. The only thing I doi know is that ring flash cast that shadow you see all around your model. Hence minimizing your ability to just shoot and post. Some pp will most likely always be needed. Thanks for sharing!
