I've been busy doing so many shoots this last few months. And few days ago I shot this new fashion series with a model I've shot quite a number of times. She is just a stunner. So here we go... any comments or critiques are welcome.

At first look, they are stunning-images I strive for...my only critique is the one with sunglasses on, her hands do not match the beauty of the face and styling of the shoot-they look worn out..and the one pulling her jacket down looks too masculine. The other 3 are amazing in my opinion.

I have a question. While I think the shots look great, I'm curious as to what they are for. The title is Fashion! so I'm assuming you shot these for a clothing line designer, maybe? I'm curious because I just did some work for a fashion designer and she wanted just standard shots of a runway shoot. Are these going to be used in an ad or some sort of marketing for this clothes? Or are these actually just shots for the models portfolio and have nothing to do with selling clothes?
I'm really only curious because I'm interested in finding out the motivation for why certain shots are made and what audience something is supposed to be targeting. So I'm trying to really study the phiolosophy behind the shots when I can. Thanks |

And I have an answer!
![]() First you have to understand that fashion photography appears in many forms. It just completely depends of the purpose of the images. In the extreme left, you will have expressive editorial images. (ill just call it editorial style) You normally find these kind of images in the editorial section Italian VOGUE. Most of the times showing the detail of the clothing is not critical. The photographer often show or sell the concept or the narration or the lifestyle behind the concept. On the other extreme, you will have Catalogue fashion images. Here, the details and the sharpness of the clothing are critical. You cannot have blurred arty farty images when shooting catalogue. Coz most of the times these type images will end up in look books or online catalogues. The prospective customer must be able to see what they are going to buy. But most of time, (not all the time), catalogue images are just snap-o-tastic without any artistic value because of this. No concept...again i said..Not most of the time. I have seen some very well done catalogue images. Enough about those two extremes, now we talk about advertising fashion images. Some advertising will appear in catalogue style and some will appear in editorial style. It simply just depends on the art director and the client. Based on my explanation about fashion photography, the images there that i made, are categorized as advertising fashion photography with editorial style. ( i haven't shown enough details of the clothing for them to be catalogue ). I hope my explanation helps. For your worked that you just did,...well.... runway shots sometimes can be used as catalogue (chanel uses their runway shots in their website as look book). But it has to be really well done, eg clean and sharp. But rarely do I see runway shots as advertising ( i have seen one and its crap ). So depends,...if you think your runway shots are clean, no noise, sharp, informative, the fashion designer may be able to use them for her/his look book. cheers, Mike |

I see my work as image making not photography. So i build everything from pre-production , production to post production. Hence, the final outcome is not a photograph but an image. ![]() |

Then I, for one, can learn a lot from watching your work. Thank you for sharing.
