Beautiful young lady and nicely shot. If your space allows, I'd have her a bit further from the background.

Nice first post with some good images.
I like the shadow on the background in the third image - it adds a little something to the image. The model, however is too close to the background in the second image. I think moving her far enough to make blurring the background slightly would improve the look. The background is also wrinkled in the lower left, which is distracting. |

I had her close to the background especially on the pattern one as it helped her pose a bit easier. do you feel the others needed to be further away as well? I wanted a shadow on the wall/background, but maybe it's too prominent with her close to it? Thanks Again Bud |

Having her further from the background seems to be the go. I have used it with a model farther away and it's not as in your face. |

Well, you didn't ask for C&C, but I hope you don't mind a few unsolicited comments.
I really like the first shot. The shade of grey you've chosen for the background works very well with the deep red of her top and the black of the rest of her outfit. I also like the pose. You often hear that you should have left space between her right arm and her torso, and that you shouldn't have tucked her left arm behind her body (creating a floating hand), but with the rest of the pose I think her arm positions work here. I like the lighting, generally even but with enough shadowing to make it interesting to me. I think it works with the shadow on the background - I like how that shadow helps offset her contour, particularly her face, from the background - though I do think it would also work if she were just a little further from the background so her shadow wasn't quite so well defined. I don't mind how busy the background is in shot 2. At a certain point, there is enough going on that the mind stops focusing on the details of the background and just registers it as "pattern" rather than "solid". I do, however, think a completely solid red dress would have been a better option. The black lace blends in with the detail of the background and cuts off her head - had this portion of the dress been red (or nonexistent, so you get skin tone there), you would have kept continuity. At first I thought the background was wallpaper in a Victorian-styled room (house, hotel). It was when I scrolled enough to see the wood floor, and the transition between background and floor, that something seemed off to me (it really wasn't until then, when I realized it was a backdrop, that I noticed things like the wrinkles in it). I'd recommend either cropping through some part of her legs to remove the floor or faking some moulding - just paint a strip of base moulding and place it at the bottom of the backdrop. I like shot 3, it works well as a B&W. I just wish she had been on the right side of the frame rather than the left; since she is looking toward the light source, I'd rather see her looking into the frame than out. There's nothing to give interest to the dead space on the right. I also wish there was some more detail in the top besides the little bit of highlight on her sleeve. However, since there is nice detail in her necklace and the hair hanging down in front of her top, I'm guessing that you had decent fill light but that the velvety material of her top just sucked it up. The last shot works as an experiment with multiple lights and gels but, particularly in comparison to the previous three, it falls short overall. She's too centered and this shot screams to be in portrait rather than landscape orientation. I'm assuming you made these choices to fit the gelled background lights - as I said, I see the merits of it as an experiment. And the light stand used as a prop brings nothing to the table. Overall I definitely like your first three shots and I hope you don't mind the suggestions. Thanks for sharing. |

I'm liking them a lot. I think short lighting her in images 1, 2, and 4 would have resulted in a more attractive lighting pattern.
