The makeup is fine but the model is slumping in the first image. The emphasis is also on the model and her dress, not the makeup.
The second image is well done, a beautiful portrait. Perfectly suitable for showing off the makeup. |

First shot model looks like she is considering bolting on you. Even if the pose were good it is not a really composition for a makeup shot.
Second shot is great for a makeup shot though the frame could be even a bit tighter. When shooting images for the MUA's Book you want 2 shots for the makeup, one composed as this one is and one chin down eyes closed to show the work on the lid. If the makeup artist is also the hair stylist then you also want three shots of the hair, front, side and back with emphasis on detail. Also just as basic info on makeup shots skin smoothing is unacceptable. As a photographer evaluating the skills of an MUA via her book I want to be able to look at the photos and see what the model looks like before I get the photo into photoshop. If the image is already smoothed then I have no idea what her true skill level is when working with foundations, cover ups and blending. a Split second in portraiture hides all that info from me and to an untrained eye may leave one thinking the artist is brilliant when in fact she may not be even kinda good. Conversely you don't want to sharpen a makeup shot for all the opposite reasons you don't want to soften one. |
