February challenge -- hard light

We all know the mantra "Soft Light Good, Hard Light Bad".

The challenge this month is to stand that rule on it's head. Show your hard light work that works.

Please include how it was shot and limit to 3 shots only

Shot with a single 16" beauty dish

Good VS Evil
Shot with bare bulb 2 x 1000W tungsten one above and behind one camera right

John I think perhaps the use of a soft box does not reflect the Hard quality of light we are looking for. The difference between single light with a soft box and single light with a bare bulb, reflector, grid or beauty dish is significant. While the end result may be a harder shadow the quality of light on the model is still quite soft when using a soft box

I'd say based on the shadow under the chin that it was a harder light. A softbox can still give a hard light if it is far enough away from the subject

Here are mine. 1 and 3 are shot in full sunlight coming into a shaded background...the light doesn't get much harder than this. The second is shot with one unmodified speed flash on the model and another unmodified speedflash shooting through a candlelabra as a gobo for the background.

Emily shot with sunlight.

Although I consider both to be hard light sources based on the crispness of the shadows (non-fuzzy), that is not the only characteristic of hard light IMO.

I agree, to my eye hard light has more punch, crisper detail edges, stronger contrast and a greater sense of depth and dimension.
