7D for hockey

For the next two years, even though I am only a volunteer, I will be the official photographer for my son's college hockey team. I already have a Canon1D that I use for still pics, but now the coach would like some video footage to use for developing plays. It doesn't have to be wonderful, but it does have to be good enough to identify players and follow the puck from a walkway above/behind the cascading seats. Picture a typical college ice skating rink, if there is such a thing.

To do this, I will need to buy something with which to shoot video (which I want to be high def and use SD memory cards); I don't particularly care about having superior audio - at least for shooting hockey. (I probably will not use the camcorder much after my son's hockey days end in a couple of years, but I would still want decent audio for the times that I do use it.)

I read a blog about possibly using the 7D as a camcorder, and asked about doing that in a DPR forum. I was promptly referred here.

I would probably rather get a new still camera which I use frequently rather than a camcorder with limited usefulness for me after hockey. I know from this forum that the 7D is sometimes used for moviemaking, but that usually entails a lot of stopping and starting; my concern about the 7D is whether it could run for 45 minutes at a time to capture a whole hockey period?

Also, are there adapter rings to convert one kind of mount to another so that I could use the lenses I already have if I get a 7D?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Soon I will be in the market for my next lens, which will probably be the 70-200 2.8L...My question:

Is there optically a difference between the glass in a IS and non-IS version of this lens?

I don't do a lot of low light shooting, so I'm confident that the non-IS version will be fine for what I do...I just want the best image quality and I don't want to pay the 600 premium for the IS version...

I've rented both and honestly cannot tell the difference....

And yes I know that the 70-200 2.8L IS II will be out soon, but from what I read you can expect a 36% increase for that lens...and I'm guessing it probably won't affect the price of the other two...

Looking forward to hearing your comments...

I'm brand new to photography. Until now, all my cameras have been point and shoot. I bought a Canon 40D with an 18-55mm lens and a 75-300mm telephoto lens. The telephoto is a 3rd party lens, but still seems to take some pretty nice photos. I've got a situation where I need to take some telephoto pictures in a low light situation. Normally, I would just figure it out myself but I seem to be having a hard time and I need to take these photos tomorrow morning not too long after sunrise. Can anyone give me any pointers on settings? My biggest problem is a lack of familiarity with all of the terms. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Also, I took a ton of pictures at my daughter's birthday party and all came out super dark even though I thought it was pretty light in there. Is there a way to salvage the pictures at all?

Originally established in 1823, it was called Barber Paper Mill.

***There was lots of graffiti all over the walls making it a very colourful place. I post processed them in a way that makes them look the way I saw them and felt how it should look like since it was supposedly haunted as well.***

Lots of ISO 3200 shots and the grain in some have been accentuated to make it look vintage. No HDR and all processed exclusively in LR 3 Beta and never saw PS CS4.

There were many more shots PP worthy but I kinda got tired after PPing 50+ and gave up.
Would the the EXIF program(Opanda) be reconizing Partial metering as Pattern?
I'm just going to be shooting landscapes, portraits. Nothing serious, but I still want to get great photos.

Now, coming from Nikon, I don't really know much Canon, especially when it comes to lenses. I've noticed that some are "L," which are supposed to be good and expensive...?
Anyways, all I'm looking for is a decent to great lenses without spending over $400.

How is the 40D by the way? I've heard it's decent. Please share any experiences.

Thank you.
