BlBl ack and White Printing: Good Older Printers?

I am getting involved with Digital Black and White processing and Printing. That means that I may need a printer that works very well for Black and White printing. My current photographic printer is a little older too, the Canon IP 8500 (standard size prints). It does a great job with color, but I am not able to judge its B&W capability.
For reference, here are its ink cartridge requirements. It cannot use any other inking system, as far as I know.

Inks: BCI-6Bk Black ink tank, BCI-6C Cyan ink tank, BCI-6M Magenta ink tank, BCI-6Y Yellow ink tank, BCI-6PC Photo Cyan ink tank, BCI-6PM Photo Magenta ink tank, BCI-6R Red ink tank, BCI-6G Green ink tank.

Now, I have been severely affected by the current recession, and I cannot look at the new or recent printers that many people people are using for B&W. Fortunately for me(?), computer components have a fairly short top of the chain period, so there should be some older printers that are good B&W printers.

Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

Thank you!

My favorite utilities for Windows 7

Who doesn't like great utilities, especially when they're free? Not all of these are specifically for Windows 7, but they all work great on the new...

Who doesn't like great utilities, especially when they're free? Not all of these are specifically for Windows 7, but they all work great on the new OS. And why would you want to run a different OS today, anyway?

;)

Switcher
Microsoft has tried to make task switching simpler and more elegant with each new version of Windows. First there was Alt-Tab. Then, in Vista, Flip3D was introduced - activated by pressing Windows Key+Tab.

But the programmers who developed the free Switcher (Switcher for Windows Vista) have outdone all of Microsoft's efforts with a utility that takes the guesswork and finger strain out of task switching once and for all. Switcher takes a snapshot of all running applications and shows them, along with their contents, as different-sized thumbnails on your computer screen. Switching to a particular application is a simple matter of surveying what you have open and clicking the program you'd like to use.

Hotkey/macro tool
There’s nothing that you can do with a mouse that you can’t do twice as fast with the keyboard – or with a keyboard shortcut. Microsoft knows this, which is why it built in more keyboard shortcuts into Windows 7 than in any previous version of the operating system.

But it didn’t go far enough. What Windows has always lacked was a built-in, system-wide utility for creating your own keyboard shortcuts – ones that can do everything from launch multiple applications to carry out a lengthy series of keystrokes. That’s where Hotkeyz (Skynergy HotKeyz) comes in. It’s currently the best free shortcut creation tool on the market, allowing you to assign virtually any combination of keys to tasks large and small.

Antivirus
Windows still doesn’t ship with antivirus or antispyware, but Microsoft’s new Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials) antivirus application is just a simple download away. It’s effective, unobtrusive, and free to any verified user of Windows 7. Unless you’re sold on the antivirus solution from a third-party provider, there’s little reason not to consider installing Security Essentials right away.

That's my list. What's yours?

I have in the past bought two computers from a company. I will not publish their name but the first part is what you open to let the cows in down on the farm. I had a simple question about the compatibility of a DVD drive since I had bought one and a adapter kit and still was not able to install it. I have recieved all types of answer and website address but no answer to the problem.

They sort of remind me of the photo school I was attending in Atlanta. One of the students could not figure out how to operate his camera. We asked him what he did for a living, he replied that he wrote technical assistance programs.

I had done a Wedding shoot last week. I am still coming to terms in stream lining a good workflow to minimise my time spend on the PC getting suqare eyes.
All my Photo images where in the correct order when transfered from my camera.
I did a number of them with post work plus others with artisic enhancemnts.
I wanted to get rid of the old name info on each image and replace it with a sequencial numbering to alow my Client to pick the Image by number.
I renamed all my Photo images to do just that and starting with a name and then the number one. That all went well. Then the big mess up came. For some reason unknown to me most of my Photo images where scattered all over the place and where not in the same place where they originaly where.
Sorted them out (took a good hour) and it did it again to me!
Why is this? Does anyone know? is there a simpler easier way to pop Photos in a sequence?
Thanks anyone"

End of december I'm going for a new computer. So far alsway used Windows PC, but I'm very impressed by the new iMac 27" (I would go for the i7 processor and the 8Gb memory).
Any suggestions/comments/experiences?
I'm using my copmuter a lot for photography/RAW/Lightroom (no...I do not want Aperture), and I need much more speed. Don't do any games, but use internet a lot.
For the money of the iMac I could by Windows computer with 12GB memory/Intel i7 920 processor and 2 terrabyte harddisks. Maybe there's a nice 26 or 27 (or maybe 30)inch computerscreen somewhere, without going to the unaffordable Eizo or comparable specific photography screens (and stil be able to use it very well for photography)?
With Windows I never had any problems with virusses and I don't know anything about Windows 7.
And the last question ....(I will post this on the Olympus/ 4/3rds forum as well); how does the image format of 4/3rds do on a wide computerscreen?
Thnxs for all responses!

I finally had to upgrade my computer. The one I have now is a Dell using Windows XP Pro. Been a super machine but it is getting some age. So I went and bought a new HP with Windows 7 Premium Home Edition and began the long process of transferring all my software to the new machine. What a headache :) I have Photoshop, Nikon Capture NX, and a host of Photoshop plugins to reinstall. Not to mention some of the other stuff I use like Access and Word. I got NX installed with some help from Nikon. Photoshop - I had to upgrade from CS3 to CS4 because I could not find my CD, had the serial numbers though. So now I am waiting on the new CD to be delivered. I have already deactivated Photoshop on the Dell. After that, reinstall all my plugins like Tiffen Dfx and Nik filters and Vivesa. It is a real pain to upgrade and some people seem to do it very often. Any shortcuts I may be missing?
