A few taken last night. The Calgary Stampede is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Luck basket with the weather! It always rains when we have fireworks in the UK. Traditionally we have our fireworks displays annually in early November.
Very impressed with the pictures, well done. |

Thanks gostwick. Next time I would shorten my exposure time a bit. I only took a few photos and decided to try and record the rest of the display using my cameras video feature. That turned out very well. I got almost 8 minutes of good video.

Love #1 and I envy having water to catch reflections in. I went to three shows in four days and didn't find water for a foreground even though one show was at a lake.

Thanks, your fireworks photos are outstanding. I actually ended up only taking a few photos and then tried the video recording on my camera just to see how it would work. There is going to be another display tomorrow night and I might try and get over to the same location and just shoot photos using the water for reflection. I also need to reduce my exposure time.

I was going to look at your settings but the EXIF doesn't appear to be intact on your posted images. If you don't mind a blind suggestion, here's what I used: ISO 100 Shutter Speed 3 sec. f16 and white balance set to tungsten.
Just looking at your images, I don't think the shutter speed is too long, I think the aperture is just open too wide. The burning pyrotechnic should record a smear across the sensor at a fairly constant intensity so the shorter shutter speed really won't affect the exposure. It's kind of like exposing shots using ambient light and flash. The shutter speed controls the ambient exposure, and the f-stop controls the flash. So, if you have a dimly lit room and use flash to light your subject, you set the f-stop for that and if you slow the shutter down, the extra exposure lets the ambient light expose more, but your subject doesn't change much. The ambient light is pretty low at dusk when most fireworks are fired and the fireworks represent the flash, use the f-stop to adjust the exposure and let the shutter stay open to allow a more dramatic smear, or trail to record. Can't wait to see your results. Steve |
