I've been away but there is some great advice by all here! I am sure looking forward to seeing your shots. It depends so much on the lighting. Some stages have bright lights so shooting at f4 is almost manageable but for all performances at night I use f2.8 and lower to get the best shots. If you really get the bug to do this then its good to invest in good glass. My fav is a 50m f1.4 lens but I have to be close to the action. A lot of folks use zoom f2.8's...you can get them wide or long. It is certainly an investment but worth it as performance shooting is such a blast.
