Pretty intense, huh?

From what I gather, suspension is mostly an extension of some of the reasons people get piercings... exploration of pain and tolerance, and in many ways quite spiritual. I tried to capture that.

A Seattle/Albuquerque group (linked above) does this as performance art, and the gallery was packed. When I heard about this show, we called them to try to get in as the official photog. I have a lot more shots, but not processed yet. Each suspension lasts about 10 minutes, and (from what I can tell) is mentally and physically exhausting, as they have to keep even tension on all the hooks. They've been doing this nearly a decade, and it's breathtaking to watch from all sorts of aspects, from the anticipation, to the reality, to the surreality.

Oh yeah, this was the first time I used bounce flash -- on a white floor (on 1).

Well taken. There is a "sun" ritual that was practiced by native Indians a long time ago (not sure what tribe) who would pierce the skin and hang for long periods of time in order to have visions that would guide them in their next conquest,or something like that. This kind of pierce hanging seen here just seems like another means to gain attention for folks who get kicks out of shocking others. Well its shocking .
