Default Windows Vista and optical drivers?

This isn't much of an issue anymore as I am running XP and will be upgrading to Windows 7 soon, but I'm just curious as to what the problem may be.
I had built a computer a few months ago and ordered my parts from newegg.com. I bought a Sony Optiarc 24X OEM DVD burner as the only dvd drive in the system. I installed Windows XP SP3 with no problems, but when I went to burn some cd's, none of my burning programs (PowerISO, MagicISO, Nero) would recognize the drive as a burner.

Furthermore, when I tried to install Windows Vista, I would get a message saying that I needed dvd drive drivers (which could not be found on the dvd) during installation. Of course, I was never able to get past the installation phase. Strange thing is that I actually installed Vista on an older computer, and it installed just fine. Although, the computer (2.53 Ghz, 512MB of ram) didn't like the OS very much so I removed it. But at least it installed.

I thought that it was a problem with my drive, so I went to Fry's and picked up a Plextor 24X DVD burner. Tried to install Vista again, same problem from both drives, which are each connected to its own SATA controller. I then installed XP SP3, no problems. Burned a few CD's, no problems on either drive. Anyone have an idea on what the problem may be?

you'd think that microsoft would include optical drivers considering you need a drive to install the program. or sony would have their drive use basic drivers included by all operating systems.. One or the other and we wouldn't have this problem.

Yeah MS should build it all in , normal drives are no problem but special drives or combo's (like mine lg) is recognized but only works good after installing all the software
