hello again guys. I went ahead and bought a laptop with windows 7. And I am happy that elements 7 runs great with windows 7. Now I think I will have to buy a new printer if I want to print from the laptop. I have a hp b8350 printer that I love. It prints great pics, but hp doe'snt make that model anymore and the software won't work with windows 7. I e-mailed hp for help and they insist that the printer will not work wireless. It's funny because I print pics from my wife's laptop that runs vista and it is downstairs and my printer is upstaire and there is no wire running to it. But hp keeps telling me it won't work wireless. I guess they think I'm lieing to them. My question now is if anyone knows if I download the software fron microsoft that lets me run windows 7 in xp mode, will my software that comes with the computer and the printer work just like if my new computer was loaded with windows xp? Would love any help that anyone could provide. Thanks

Rich,

I don't know about the XP compatibility stuff, but according to the HP web page, Win 7 has built in drivers for your printer. As for remote printing, this page sounds like you can only do wireless printing with a Airport Router on a Mac, or by attaching to a Windows computer that is on all the time and has the printer shared for other computers on the network.

Hello guys
You are right. My printer is is sharing with the other computer useing a network. The computer that's hooked up with cables has to be on for the other one to print. I'm just surprized that the guy from hp did'nt figure that out. He just kept telling me there was no way that I could be printing with this printer unless it was hooked up with a cable. And I found out windows 7 has a basic driver that will allow me to print with my printer but it will have to be connected to my new laptop running windows 7. And then it will only have limited options in printing. And I will have to find a new printer now that is combatable with windows 7. Any suggestions? I want one that can print up to 13x19. I was looking online at best buy but did'nt see any that said they would work with windows 7.

You should be able to locate the shared printer on the network and install the driver from there.

If that doesn't work, try hooking it directly to your computer to install the driver, then put it back the way it is and point your driver that you just installed to the new, shared location.

I am upgrading this weekend, rather my son is going to upgrade for me, I apparently have the same system as Ohenry. Looking forward to the increased memory.

80 percent of viruses love Windows 7
By Davey Winder in Editorial

According to one leading security research lab, Windows 7 is vulnerable to an astonishing 8 out of 10 viruses it was exposed to during testing. But wait a minute, just how astonishing is this, really?

Sophos loaded a retail release copy of Windows 7 onto a clean PC, configured it to the system default as far as the User Account Control process was concerned, and failed to install any anti-virus software. OK, so this might be a little unfair you would think, but it does represent the actions of many a person new to the new OS. Microsoft insists it is the most secure version of Windows yet, and ‘ordinary users’ will take the company at its word.

What Sophos did next was less typical, instead of connecting the machine to the Internet and clicking every link under the sun until it was infected up the wazoo, it instead “grabbed the next 10 unique samples that arrived in the SophosLabs feed to see how well the newer, more secure version of Windows and UAC held up” says researcher Chet Wisniewski.

Unsurprisingly, Windows 7 didn’t do too well in fighting off these new threats. Indeed, it only managed to prevent 2 out of those 10 from operating correctly. Wisniewski insists that this just goes to show that his pre-launch warning that the UAC is not fit to protect a PC from malware was indeed correct. While I actually agree with him on this point I’d also argue that any machine that is not running an up to date anti-virus solution is asking for trouble no matter what version of Windows is installed.

I’d be more interested to see that same test performed on the same Windows 7 PC but running different AV solutions, including the new and free Microsoft Security Essentials to be honest. I wonder how far and how many of those 10 viruses would get then?

I wonder if Microsoft will come out fighting against Sophos this time, like it did when XP Mode security came under attack in the summer?
Article.

A test made by Sophos - a software company selling antivirus applications ... lol ...

I must be doing something wrong ... never had a virus on my windows 7 machine.

I just bought the 32bit version - Maybe I should have gone for the 64bit version!!! I have a Q6600 processor and all my hardware is pretty new so I'm sure the drivers would not have been a problem! Decisions decisions!!!! Just delivered today (not installed yet though)!

Unless you bought the OEM version, the retail version of Windows 7 comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

It was delivered to a different address so I didn't immediately see the verion that came and so I just came on to post that my DVD does indeed include both versions

I think I'll try the 64bit version first and play around with it. Luckily I have a spare 300Gb drive awaiting it so will do a clean install (which I need to do from XP) and hope I can get it all working ok.

I should still be able to use XP by switching my boot drive ok if I do have any trouble

Signing off
Cheers
JD

Well it didn't take too long to install and get on the web. Still a few things to install right enough but getting there and must say W7 does look nice. 64bit seems pretty fast too.
