I travel and want a small laptop to take along for the usual business stuff and e-mail but also for light photo work such as downloads and possible light edit work. I really don't want or need a desktop replacement or mega laptop hoping to stay in the $400 to $800 range. any thought or experiences??

It's all about compromises. I went through the same predicament recently.
From what I found, through testing and the experience of others, is that a netbook offers great portability but lousy photo editing capability. Screen real estate matters on those things as well. Trying to edit a big photo on a 10" screen is very difficult. I ended up with a refurbished 16" laptop that fit my needs after I reprioritized them. |

After doing some research I think the HP dv2 series is the way to go. There are a couple of variations but the one with the 12" screen, 4G RAM, decent battery life, above average video card, DL DVD burner and HDMI out seems to be the one, especially with the rebate it is $599, not too, too much more than an under powered net book at $400.

Nice compromises across the board. If I hadn't come across this Toshiba, I'd have probably gone with HP and something similar.
