Now that Windows 7 is (almost) out, I'm having trouble justifying using Windows Vista or XP on any of my machines. So I'm curious about the distribution of OS's that the regulars around here are using. Maybe others will be, too?

Well I run both. I have both a pc running vista and a macbook pro. No option for two or more. I checked vista
Is 7 as good as they say it is? I remember everyone raving about vista when it came out. ![]() |

![]() Running Win 7 on 2 of my PC's 64bit Ultimate edition. Got mine fromTech net so it is the RTM and no issues. Works alot better then Vista ever did. Also running WHS on my 3rd PC as a backup. |

I have used Vista for 2 years now and have started to like it. OK there are things I hate about it but Windows 7 is off my list for sure, unless Bill gives it the Classic interface option (aka Windows 2000 look and feel). Never like Aero in Vista and sure will not like in Windows 7. The Start Bar is just way to large and needs to be trimmed down.
I also use XP and XP64 |

Yeah, I have to say the best thing about running the 64 bit version, for me, is that I really do feel somewhat liberated with 8 gigs of RAM. I can have a lot more applications open.

Currently running Vista 32bit but will be going to Win 7 64bit as soon as it's available. I don't really have issues with Vista, as it performs admirably on my machine. I just want to go to 64 bit and think Win 7 would be a wiser choice than Vista for that. NO, I don't want to shift over to Apple, tyvm.

It is. But the road to 64 bit itself can be a bit bumpy. If you have a lot of hardware stuff attached to your computer, you could run into driver issues on 64 bit operating systems. And I don't know how fast hardware makers are going to update their drivers to specifically support Windows 7, but right now a lot of them haven't.

64 bit really means nothing unless your app needs to address more than 2^31 bytes of data. AFIK there are no consumer apps that need that much memory. So far I've only come across 1 commercial app that needs it and it provides service to over 1million users.
64 bit will not make your 32bit apps run faster, 64 bit apps will just run fatter. Lazy programming is the bane of my existence. |

I'm like you felix...often have multiple programs running, as well as processing large files with aps that use a lot of memory that PS sometimes can't handle very well with the limitations of a 32bit system.

Oh boy! Haven't I heard similar to that a lot over the last 25 years. Of course with the power users like ohenry ( greetings ) they hit the shut gate long before anyone else and have that critical urge to upgrade, but to mundane users like myself I urge caution. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. |
