Microsoft Plans Largest-Ever Patch Tuesday
Microsoft said it will deliver its largest-ever number of security updates on Tuesday to fix 13 flaws in every version of Windows, as well as Internet Explorer (IE), Office, SQL Server, important developer tools and Forefront Security client software. Among the updates will be the first for the final, or release to manufacturing, code of Windows 7, Microsoft's newest operating system. The 13 updates slated for next week, eight of them pegged 'critical,' beat the previous record of 12 updates shipped in February 2007 and again in October 2008. Correcting that math a bit, goto to Microsoft's Advance Notification page for the release, which says that rather than 13 flaws, this Patch Tuesday involves "13 bulletins (eight critical and five important), addressing 34 vulnerabilities ... Most of these updates require a restart so please factor that into your deployment planning. Microsoft plans monster Patch Tuesday next week Have fun, guys! __________________

I don't get why the up to 179MB MAC OS security update released on Sept. 10 this year wasn't a big deal then? The 5th one this year?
Every OS does this...including your beloved Mac. |

You're right, that's not a big deal. But thirteen times is a royal PITA! Quote:

Just because it's 13 updates doesn't mean it's 13 restarts. Sheesh. ![]() Quote:
It's obvious you're back to your standard MacAddict tactics here. Doesn't it get old? It's immature and rather stupid, imo. It's so easy to identify you with it, too. You just can't help yourself! ![]() |

Agreed. What's the news here, really? I'm glad Microsoft is keeping up. What's the penetration of Mac vs Windows? 10% vs 90? If Mac had the user base of Windows, there would plenty of hackers finding holes in it. Apple shot itself in the foot long ago with its decision to keep a stranglehold over the market for Mac hardware--and to keep prices high. The rest is history. And Apple lost.

Browser usage figures are much more dramatic (for MS): IE is down to just over 50% now, and still haemorraging. Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are effectively replacing IE. On the music front MS was totally thrashed by iPods, and iTunes. And WinMo can't hold a candle to iPhone. MS doesn't need any help to screw up. It is perfectly capable of doing that itself: Zune, IE, Vista, EU, etc. etc. Quote:

Many IT professionals weigh the benefits of updates with the impact on applications and productivity. Some updates need to be tested with apps, including custom apps. And Macs do the same thing so don't think you're exempt there either. So some updates may not be pushed to workstations. As an IT manager, if I choose to selectively run certain updates, I may have to deal with reboots. If I choose others, I may not. That's all they are saying. |

I find this ironic from the guy just spouting how Apple is slowly building up market share but the overall sales figures compared to Microsoft still looks like Mini-me looking up at Andre the Giant. You keep twisting logic to suit your arguments. Typical MacAddict. |

I built a computer not long ago and had to install all of the security updates since SP1 was released (which is a LOT). While doing that the computer restarted once, installed all of the updates it had downloaded and started back up for use. The whole process took 30 minutes from the time the installation was began, and that was a WHOLE lot more than just 13 updates. MS knows that it would be a PITA to restart a computer 13 times, so it automates the process, and it is completely painless.

Arguing over a computer's OS is akin to a couple of grade school children arguing over a toy. Perhaps you could spend this time being productive. You know, go take some photo's, or use your beloved computer to seek out some counseling. It's amazing what folks will find to bicker over.
