What do you guy thinks is good Photo editing software for some one who can't Afford Photo shop's price tag. I was looking at Smith Micro's Pixelmator any other better suggestion? This is for a Mac.

I used to use The Gimp, which is free, so it's the ultimate solution to no budget photography. Photoshop Elements, however, is worth the price if you can spring for it.
I'd also note as Photoshop Elements 8 is due out in a few weeks, Elements 7 is now on sale at a discount from Amazon and many other retail outlets. |

Elements, for sure. A lot of people find that Elements offers all the features they need. If you are developing you skills and one day want to move up to the industry standard, you'll already be familar with the program and its basic features.

For strictly photo editing software, at a more than reasonable price, you can not go wrong with LR2
If you are a student, or a parent of a student, you can get it even cheaper at www.academicsuperstore.com |

It depends on what your requirements are and what you feel comfortable with. A very nice compilation of free software related to photography has been compiled by the fellow forum-visitor Peter Zack.

Lightroom is not a complete image editor. Some editing functions can only be done in Photoshop. |

Agreed. LR2 is more of a 'front office' to Photoshop (set in the Prefs). It's excellent at image management (a bit like PhotoMechanic) and includes (quite) a number of editing functions. Often that's enough so using Photoshop is not neccessary in those cases. But for fine tweaking and complex, detailed editing you do need Photoshop, though.

While you study your options, why not download Gimp and get familiar with it in the meantime. Especially if you are new, it will more than meet your needs, and what you learn while using it is easily transferable to the other applications mentioned.
Even if you know you'll eventually want something else, there is certainly no harm in downloading the Gimp for free and giving it a try. Caruso |

GIMP is still 8-bit only and has no RAW converter?
There are free RAW converters available. |

If you need to go deeper than 8-bit, you could look at CinePaint. The interface is similar but not as advanced as GIMP. The program's ability to handle greater than 8-bit is, for the moment, unsurpassed. Raw converters available include UFRaw which is quite capable and also free. Caruso |

Has anyone tried "paint.net" ? It is a free download. This is not that same useless "paint" that comes with windows. DAve
