Default External HDD care

Heard that the worst enemy of HDDs (internal or external) is heat. My external HDD (sole purpose to hold pictures) gets hot after a while of being switched on. Not too hot that you can't touch it but more than warm. Is that OK. Also, what would you recommend for keeping it in good shape, other than making DVD backups and defrag'ing once in a while.

Thanks

Edit: of course one has to disconnect the HDD before switching it or the PC off.

Heat IS the enemy. I use a Venus DS3 enclosure for my externals. It has a cooling fan to keep the housing ventilated.

Chip suggested exactly what I was going to. The Venus enclosures are the best that I've tried, and I've tried TOO many.

The fan, by the way, is SILENT in these things. Important to me.

So do you suggest buying the drive and the casing separately. The one I have is an iomega 250 GB. It's really is a WD with an iomega case (with a fan too).
