As usual, when new software is introduced, it's got bugs. I've found it saves me a lot of trouble, aggravation, and time when I wait for an update or two before installing it. And Apple reseller sales people – yesterday and the day before I visited 3 Apple resellers for this very purpose – recommend waiting in the case of SL as well.

According to Apple forums – and according to sales people at Apple resellers – Snow Leopard causes a lot of people a lot of problems: crashes, freezes, peripherals not working, doesn't do a clean install, doesn't handle PDFs correctly, ethernet problems, Trash problems, iPhoto problems, Flash problems, Wi-Fi problems, etc. etc. etc. The list goes on and on...

Snow Leopard is clearly not ready for the market yet, and Apple should be ashamed of itself for releasing malware like that under the moniker of a "new and improved operating system".

It's best – and recommended by sales people at Apple resellers! – to NOT install Snow Leopard just yet, but to wait for OSX.6.1, or preferably even OSX.6.2. Although that may be a few months...

I had major problems shortly after installing Snow Leopard, but it turned out to be a hard drive that was actually failing. I wrote a blog post about it at:

Computer headaches and why you should always backup your data! | Nude Photo Pro

After having a new drive installed and doing a clean install, I decided to only install the applications I regularly use, such as Office 2008 and Photoshop CS4 etc. without the 101 small utility programs we often install but never actually use. Apart from a few very minor bugs I have to say that OS X has never been faster or more stable and I have been using it since it was first released about 8 ago. Snow Leopard doesn't deserve much criticism based on what I am seeing here.

As a quick follow up to the original question by NikonMarty, something is clearly wrong and I would contact Apple directly. I was able to upgrade from 10.5.8 without a problem and was just unlucky that my drive started to fail a couple days later.

I haven't heard anything like this at all. My wife and I have Snow Leopard running on two MacBook Pros, an iMac and a Mac Pro and we don't have any problems at all.

I promise you you're wrong about Apple salespeople not recommending SL -- Apple salespeople recommend it every day.

Sure, there may be minor issues here and there but SL is a great upgrade and worth installing.

Then you haven't read Ashley's post in this thread, tom, or

.

My wife and I have Snow Leopard running on two MacBook Pros, an iMac and a Mac Pro and we don't have any problems at all.

Wrong? If they told me it to my face? Are you denying reality?
You're wishful thinking, tom.
Of course! Apple sales people would recommend SL. Sales people at Apple resellers don't, however: because 1) they don't lose their jobs for telling the truth!, and 2) they don't want all the aggravation as a result of frozen Macs with SL.

With so many major issues SL is far from "a great upgrade". In fact Apple should be deeply ashamed of itself for releasing such an immature product.

Gina -- I didn't see Ashley's post in the forum you linked -- I just see a forum talking about Mac stuff. Nothing about how terrible SL is, although I guess that thread might be there.

Should I link to all the great reviews SL is getting -- MacNN, Mac Daily News, MacRumors, Mac OS X Hints, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and on and on?

NO WHERE have I seen that SL was released prematurely except in your post. The small sample that I know of (friends and family who are using it) all think it's great. That's a fact.

I think you may be making a "tempest in a teapot" as they say.

It really is a great upgrade, but if you're nervous about upgrading, by all means wait. I'm sure Apple is working on 10.6.2 and by then it may be good enough.

As far as I can remember I have never posted on Apple Insider unless Gina is referring to a different Ashley. 10.6 is running beautifully for me now I have that hardware problem sorted out. From where I am sitting no earlier version of OS X or for that matter any other OS has ever been better.
