Would you adam and eve it, the hard drive that was used specifically for photos backup has stopped being recognised by bios, when connected using the data and power cables, Windows stops loading about a second into the boot up process.
Exhausted all means of swapping power/data cables, since this is a SATA drive, it was easy. But never solved the problem of it not being recognised. I had to order the same hard drive from ebay. One bad residing memory of ordering from ebay, is that one of them was a fraudently b*****d, who said that I had paid for the "page". Though, hopefully ebay has since realised that it was going on. The reason why, I have order the same hard drive from ebay......is to extract the logical board from it, I just so hope it works, otherwise, I will have to pay £97-£150 for a data recovery. And this on the fact that I was shortly going to back up the photos, grrrrrrr.....gets you at an inopportune moment Anyone had a similar situation? __________________

you may want to try spin right on the disc, it can take a long time (we've had one running for a couple weeks, but it works well on getting the data back. Might be something to try before switching the boards.
If bios doesn't see it I can't promise it will work, but may be a thought. |

The point is, that if I connect up the data and power cables, Windows won't work but will give it a go if it doesn't work |

It doesn't need to. you set your bios to boot from either cd of thumbdrive depending on what you have spin rite on.
Cd is easier because not all thumbdrives will boot and not all pcs will boot a thumb drive. We have it running on a spare older tower from a cd. When we started it wouldn't boot at all, paused a few days ago and got it to boot to windows but it won't stay up long enough to retrieve the data so back to spinning, it was at 47% when we paused it. |

Haha, don't do that, I love WD, now that Hitachi/IBM and Maxtor are scrubbed off my list of trusted hard disks manufacturers Thankfully, the Hitacchi failed years before I got the Canon 400d, phew!!!!! But Maxtor was a turn up for the book, lol |

Just today my 500Gb Hitachi drive failed
Everything is backed up though (except my Lightroom catalogue) ![]() This is my second Hitchi drive failure and I'll not buy another! Just ordered a seagate 7200.12 1Tb drive as a replacement. As it was an OEM drive Hitachi say it's not covered by warranty either!! All drives are prone to failure and in fact WILL fail at some point. Backups are critically important and I'm happy I've not lost too much. |

Not really
![]() I have the followg drives already installed (all Gb) Internal 300Gb 200Gb 250Gb Extermal 1000 500 500 400 200 200 The 500 internal that went was backed up with the 500 external but I screwed up by not backing up my Lr catalogue with 30000 images in it!!! I only had 10000 in my backup catalogue. Still the images are there and I can reedit thise that need done. 1Tb of data goes quick when you shoot a lot of images! |

I have tried this, as I guessed, since it isn't being recognised by the BIOS, neither will Spinrite recognise it |

I agree, i hardly i can fill my one external HDD 500GB with photos only, i have many cameras that vary in mp, even with some TIFF full size still there are space in my drive, but i was smart enough that i didn't buy one 500GB HDD, i bought 2, and to be honest, both of the HDD have photos at about 20-30% of the whole size, and the rest is just mix of applic., songs, movies, games,....etc.
