Default Working on New Computer and need advice?

Morning all,

I had to buy a new computer and got an HP Pavillion DV7 w/Vista Home Premium 64bit and am waiting for the Windows 7 free upgrade.

Now, my first knee jerk reaction is to try and install my CS2 into this Vista system but I've been trying to hold back for a couple of reasons. I'm not sure how it will work considering all of the hype I've heard in the past about trying to make older programs run on this buggy system anyway.

Or, should I just hang in there and wait for the new version of Windows which is supposed to take care of these kinds of problems. Thats a "big supposed" hehe

I did get to install my Elements 5, my Waccom Tablet and a couple of other things which of course had a Vista version on my disks. Runs slightly different but it works and its of course PE5 is not 64 bit but I'll take it. Even my old HP Photosmart 7360 had a Vista version disk. I was lucky.

Has anybody had any success with installing this old version into a new Laptop? What problems can I expect?

Thanks in advance

If there is another thread about this I would appreciate the link. I just searched out the directories with no success.

Thnx, Biff. Have you done it? Are you speaking from experience using Vista Home Premium?

yes, I have been using Vista home premium from the first days of it's issue and have ran photoshop cs2 & 3 on my machine with no problems. That being said I really dislike Vista and am counting the days till I purchase windows 7.

Despite my initial displeasure with Vista, I've been running it on three different machines and a notebook. I have to say that I can't remember ever having a single crash like with some of the older Windows OS's. I have only run into a couple of peripheral programs that wouldn't run on Vista 64.

REALLY? Either you are very lucky, or I'm extremely UNlucky.
I bought a laptop with Vista Premium on it, and 4 Gig of Ram.

Every time I tried to edit a photo using PS3, I got the blue screen of death.
Then when I tried to upload photos to my Smugmug page, BSOD.

I returned that turd to the store and got a refund.
This was just before they were offering the free upgrade to Windows 7.

I disagree, I have used windows from the dos days and generally have had little trouble, even vista has not given my any serious problems. The issue I have is the annoying security features and the hoops that one needs to jump through in basic operation of the OS.
I really loved XP, but my machine came with Vista installed and swapping to XP would void the four years of tech support that came with the machine.

I don't work for Microsoft, but am not going to down Microsoft for one unpopular product as they control the greater majority of the OS market and it didn't happen because they put out a consistently poor product.

I also wouldn't refer to Apple as Appleshit just because it was not my preferred operating system... though many faults can be found with apple operating systems like Microsoft’s.

IMHO

The only problems I've had with Windows OS's were: when 98 came out it was very buggy until sp2, then nor more problems. Windows ME was the biggest POS ever made. XP was pretty decent, although some programs ran better before sp1. Vista I hated because it would randomly hide files from me, disabled some of the security crap and no problems since. Like I said, I cannot remember having a single BSOD using Vista on any of my machines.

My very first puter was an Apple IIC. Thee very first portable, pre Laptop. I had it for a long time, till Apple came out with the next big thing the Granny Smith and then they just turned there backs on all of the previous Models. No support, no more programs, nothing. We spent a good amount of money on our machines and they went and turned there backs on us completely.

Ever since then, even though not all of the programs from MicroSoft are great most are worth getting. Operating Systems did u say??

Lets see if we can all list them:
3.0 wasn't too terrible but I didn't see any version before this

3.1 was absolutely great and a much better version of Dosshell

I had two full puters that used 3.1.1 which I guess was like an SP version

I next had Win 98 and I think I also had two, maybe LOL
XP definately 2 puters and now back to a Laptop

CS2 will function fine on Vista Home Premium 32bit, as that is the version of Photoshop and Vista I have.

Like Harry, I have not had any problems with my Vista crashing, but Microsoft had most of the bugs worked out by the time I got this system.

Thought so.
Looks like you've left out some info on the 5000 that survey was taken of. Nearly 75% of those surveyed had either not used it extensively or not at all and some had never even heard of it. It seems odd to me to be using a survey to support your statement that the majority of users weren't users.

On top of that, those still using XP in the group didn't upgrade for the same reasons I didn't (Vista came with my new PC, so I don't consider that I upgraded). That is XP still worked great and it wasn't worth upgrading to Vista. Vista also had very high system requirements that really required a new machine. Only just over 20% had compatibility concerns.

So, basically, your survey is hogwash! They should have at least surveyed IT pros, or at the very least people who had actually used Vista regularly.

Thanks all for the information.

I just loaded up CS2 and at a fast glance it all looks like its working fine. I just placed the ACR latest version that CS2 can take and I'm trying to figure out if its in the correct place. Hmmmm, this computer thing that looks like its the update to the old My Computer doesn't copy, move or anything does it?

I don't know why some people are making an excuse to get hostile in my thread. My CS2 is an old version that runs on XP. My new computer is running a Dual Core 64bit version and is using Vista Home Premium.

In almost all versions of Windows, when running older programs you might find a few bugs here and there. This is normal of almost all versions except maybe Win 98. Never had any problems with that one. In XP, even though it was a very good version for my use, there were a couple of crashes thru the years and some of the older programs that I had never seem to work at all under this operating system.

Now getting hostile about MicroSoft?? I don't know, they've never have done anything to me except made my life a lot more easier while using computers. I remember the days way before any kind of standards or GUI ever came out. You got yourself a nice program, then you first had to start to learn it. How to copy, save and rename things. No two programs did it the same way. Until MS Windows came out that is. Now you had not only a Format, but the way the over functions worked were all exactly the same. You knew one program, you then were able to figure out and use all of the other programs that are around. If I had 5 programs back in those early days and I'm also including some real lame stupid games each program was a major learning experience and it took you forever to learn it. Sometimes you just returned it becuase it was so impossible.

Take it from a tech that works on LOTS of computers. Every problem I have found with MS comes from someone not reading the manual carefully. The number of lame hardware installations poor programmers who write the drivers without following the directions, not using the correct and or latest drivers. I still have a few clients who run Windows 98 which was doomed because of the piss poor hardware. It still does what they want it to do. Granted MS does come up with a few bugs, BUT, they are quickly corrected and an free update released. Too bad most of the people who bitch about MS never had to lease software from IBM at $10,000 a Month. Thats right a month. For each piece of software. Get down on your knees and kiss Bill for saving you from that.
