Default Perpendicular recording hard drives

The first "perpendicular recording" hard drive is available in quantities:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148134

This is pretty exciting for those of us whose digital images and other files seem to eat hard drives by the dozen.

750GB is just the start. 1 TB hard drives are just around the corner.

Another enjoyable offshoot of this rapid increase in storage tech is that lower-capacity drives have fallen a lot in price. 300 GB drives, still usable, are under $100.

Can't wait for 1TB disks to be readily available. A couple of those mirrored would be perfect for my current audio/visual storage requirements. However, you'll pay a premium for them at first. Maybe 4 or 5 300GB drives in a RAID5 box would give you similar storage with similar (or even better) redundancy.

Melees link is saying up to 10X storage of todays drive. We're going to be looking at 3 to 4 Terabytes drives with this technology.

I'm not too worried. That's what they said about the drives we have now.

Were actually testing a couple of the 750's where I work now. Though I'll still wait as I dont need that much storage yet, we've had absolutly no problems with them so far. A couple years ago I priced outa 1TB array which I never got around to building and it was something like 4-5 grand for drives, a controller card (that did raid5) and what not. Having 1TB in a mirror would make the cost (with a 3ware controller) something like $1500. I have to say that makes me drool more than a little being a data packrat. I currently have a good raid5 card Im not using and a spare machine, 4 750's for 1.5TB raid 5 plus a hot spare for about 2k makes me a very happy camper.

So will these drives work as standard IDE drives in today's systems?

And will the BIOS of recent-vintage PCs recognize the full capacity of these drives, or do they need drivers?
