If macs became the main stream there would be more mac virus, most virus writers want to hit the largest target audience and right now that is windows users.
We routinely switch people to linux here but I still caution people to have an antivirus installed and to run an occasional check even though linux isn't highly targeted and even has its own precautions in dealing with attacks. Right now its not a problem on macs but I don't think its a good idea to tell people its impossible, they will rather side swiped if and when it happens. ![]() |

Here is a list of Mac malware which obviously doesn't exist because Macs are invulnerable to attack.
MacScan Macintosh Spyware List of Keyloggers, Trojan Horses, Backdoors and Spyware for Mac OS X A quick google will find you forums full of Mac users with infected computers. |

I never told "people its impossible", moon. Everything is possible. Eventually.
I told – and am telling – people that, right now (and in the past 25 years!), in real life, Macs are de facto invulnerable to viruses. What happens tomorrow is anyone's guess. But the facts are that OSX sofar (25 years!) has an impeccable track record, as opposed to Windows' track record that is riddled with over 120,000 viruses... |

So you are going to argue over semantics? Trojans, backdoors and spyware are all types of viruses. You are the only person complaining about pop ups at this site, yet you say the infection lies in photocamel? Thats akin to saying you are sneezing because everyone else has a cold. I visit this site on as many as 5 different computers. None of them with popups. 3 of which without firewalls or an active virus scanner. No pop ups. All windows OS based. You know why there are so many window viruses made? Because windows has the highest marketshare of computers world wide. If you were a car parts manufacturer, would you want to make them for Honda, or Yugo? (not comparing mac to yugos, just using them as a numbers) You would make them for the dominating system. Same with viruses. Get off your high horse. Your computer is infected with something. Your mac isnt immune to everything. The only reason you should get pop ups here is if you have PM's. |

You may not have meant to say that but the implication is there. Its not the experienced or future thinking computer user I worry about its the newbies who get a false sense of security. Besides there are still trojans for macs, granted you have to install them. People with a false sense of security don't tend to watch for suspicious things. I've seen people install some dumb things purposely, anyone heard of zango? All operating systems have their advantages and disadvantages and in a lot of ways windows sucks, virus' being just one of them. |

If you want to get technical Avast lists less than 50 true binary Viruses for Windows, the main source of infection included in your 120,000 is Malware: scripts, macros, trojans, worms, etc. |

...as a footnote, a little advisory from Apple themselves
Mac OS 9: How to Check For Viruses Mac OS 9: How to Check For Viruses
This article explains how to check for viruses. Regularly check for viruses on your hard disk using an anti-virus program, especially if you download files from the Internet or share files with others. Check periodically for any updates to the anti-virus programs you use to ensure that the programs are scanning for the latest known viruses. Although virus infections are rare, they do exist and can cause problems with (and sometimes damage) your files or application programs. Reviews of popular Macintosh anti-virus software products can be found on the Web at the Macworld and MacAddict Web sites, for example. This document contains information from Help Center, the help system included with your computer. |

all viruses are malware, but not all malware is viruses. Just like all cows are mammals, but not all mammals are cows. Who said there are "no security vulnerabilities"? Of course there are. But a "security vulnerability" is not a virus! And Apple patches security vulnerabilities to prevent them being exploited by hackers and script kiddies before they can develop and release viruses (or other malware) to exploit them. And sofar with eminent success: ZILCH OSX viruses in the wild! |

OSX – a UNIX derivative – has nothing at all to do with OS9. It is an entirely different animal. You might as well have posted something out of a maintenance manual of a Ford Edsel. Just as irrelevant. |

He probably is. He must have stock in apple. He is still arguing that because he is the only person who visits this site and gets popups, that it must be the site and not him. Wish Brian was around to totally pummel this guy. |
