Default Hard Drive Mystery

My hard drive was giving indications of crashing so I had all of my data backed up and a new hard drive installed. After I got it back I decided to delete many of the photos that I have been meaning to delete but have been procrastinating. Here is the mystery. Yesterday I deleted about 30 gigs of photos and instead of the hard drive showing more space available it showed less. I can't figure out what's going on. I have an external hard drive hooked up that is supposed to back up everything and it shows way more space available. When I derlete I always check the box that says delete from hard drive. Any ideas as to what's going on here?

Operating System is Vista Home Premium. Yes, I emptied the recycle bin and each time I emptied it and went to " My Computer" the hard drive would register more gigs full then before.
