Default Running Dual Monitors

I am considering adding a second monitor so that I can drag files back and forth between them. My current video card does not support dual monitors and I don't have any spare slots. I know I need to get a dual monitor card. When I put that in I will be able to sue both monitors and run different software on each correct?

Any other help would be appreciated.

Thanks

What budget are you working with for the new video card? What is the make and model of your PC or if it is built from the ground up what motherboard was used? The video card slot type will be very important in offering any possible suggestions.

I will say this straight out though I am very biased towards Nvidia and will be recommending an Nvidia based card once I know more info. Really the only other card someone might suggest would be an ATi at this point.

Mike,

Most modern video cards have both a VGA output and an DVI output, if not two DVIs (there are adapters that allow VGA monitor cables to connect). Install the card in your 'puter, and the OS (assuming XP or Vista, but others will too) will recognize it. Turn on your computer, do a right click on one of the monitor backgrounds and you can easily configure the system to the manner that you want.

I personally use a single card with two monitors, a graphics series CRT for working color in pics and a LCD for working sharpness and detail.

Don't be afraid... it is really easy.

I have a limited budget but I found an ATI Radeon X1600XT PCI-E 256MB . I am running an Acer x1700 with Vista.

Thanks Dan. My card has a DVI output and a small slot next to it that I think is HDMI. Does that mean I can connect 2 monitors?
