Default IE 8 Update Problems

Has anyone else been having problems with the new IE 8 update?

Whenever I open a new tab and then try to close it my computer (PC-Vista Home Premium) freezes up. When I click on the X to close the tab the tab turns green and then stays visible. So far the only way I have found to fix the problem is to uninstall the update. This is getting extremely tiresome as now every time I turn on the computer I get the notice that updates are available and IE 8 update is the only one checked. I've tried unchecking the IE 8 update and proceeding but that seems to end the update session.

I'm not looking for a mac v. PC, Vista v. XP , IE v. Firefox et al debate; just a little insight.

Is there some setting I'm missing?

Vista Ultimate and IE8 works fine for me; I continue to use Firefox out of preference though.

I'm using IE8 and when I run into a problem with a site I hit the compatability button. In fact I now just run the program in the compatability mode. This seems to solve all problems. Hope this helps.

Which antivirus program do you have. AVG 8.x (8.5) has issues with IE and on Vista systems

So IE8 and Vista don't jive? Replace one or both.

You need to test in no add ons mode. Rather than go into it, here are good instructions:

Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

I am using AVG 8.5 and don't have any problems with IE 7.

I'll give the compatability mode thing and the No Add On mode a try when I have a bit more time to trouble shoot.

Thanks again.

MS made the biggest mistake in their short history with IE8. Need to figure out how to remove it.

Control Panel, remove IE 8. That will restore the previous IE. If you upgrade to Win 7, you can remove all IE's (from the release version).

Well, I have had some time to try the various suggestions. Alas, the problem persists. I removed the IE 8 update for the umpteenth time and then installed Firefox to give it a try.

I have found Firefox to be pretty quick but am disappointed that to view video, listen to music, or view pdf files various add-ons must be installed. So I don't know that I will be using Firefox much as I don't want to spend all my time installing add-ons.

So for now I will continue with IE 7.

Thanks everybody.

So will I as I object to debugging Microsoft's software for them. IE7 is not perfect but it works 99.9% of the time.

The thing I object to, now, is that Microsoft Update keeps on trying to instal IE8. You have to be so careful what you click!

I went back to IE7 when I discovered conflict between McAfee and IE8 and McAfee's website gave this as the solution.

Mr. P,

Yeah, my machine keeps wanting to update to IE 8 as well. It really makes me think that all that talk about Microsoft taking over the world is starting to come true.

It is most frustrating that there doesn't seem to be anyway to tell the updater that I don't want IE 8 and to stop trying to force it down my throat so to speak.

Computers - can't live with them and sometimes don't want to.

I, too, am struggling with IE8. Seems Bill Gates, or his successors, feel the entire web has to submit to the changes required by Microsoft. That is generally what happens, but it makes for difficult times for users. Probably, eventually, things will straighten out, til the next version comes out and we start all over again. This "Compatability Mode" thing bugs me to no end. So far, things are slower than they ever were. I do like the features, but when you get stalled, it isn't any help to have such great features!

I keep it installed, and hope for a better future. The Beta was the worst, but the final was a little better, not much, but better. So, I wait for an update that actually is good.

It will likely be one of those situations where you will need a newer faster machine to really be able to use these new features. So buy the latest greatest and fastest most loaded machine you can get, and MAYBE it will work flawlessly!

the main problem is that microsoft is lazy , doesn't test very well and bring a os to the market that is not hack safe.

unfortunately i do use MS too, linux is nothing for me , and my most uesd programs do not run on linux or just in a disabled mode (less features)

perhaps can google throw some salt in open wounds at microsoft , the problem these days that os are only getting bigger and bigger so even a good dual core can run full sometimes
