Sorry it's in German - but they are selling obviously off the shelf PC with Mac OSX.

There are also VMWare ISO available and certain solutions running it 'natively' on PC harware.

Are those solution good? No idea - but you CAN run Mac OSX on PC hardware. Another question is why would one want to run Mac OSX on a PC but thats another fruitless discussion ...

No, I can't.
Only tinkering deep geeks and pros can. Not the general public. Not Joe Blow and Jane Doe, the average PC users. 99% of the market (yes, that includes most Mac users).
In the lab almost anything is possible. On the street is another matter entirely.

Psystar out of Florida was the off the shelf, every day person could buy Mac clone maker.

Unauthorized Mac clone maker Psystar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Florida, temporarily slowing down Apple's legal case against it. The filing may be an indication that the company's financial backers have pulled out, signaling they see Apple as the clear winner in court....

They have been in business for several years. They advertised heavily in some Mac magazines. They were big enough to stand up to Apple without folding until very recently.

These posts are not serving the OP any good and are degrading the thread, IMHO. I no longer wish to engage in this discussion.

Since you're avoiding the topic, let me provide the answer for you, Tony: Psystar shipped exactly ZERO MacOSX running PCs!

Psystar did take orders and advance payments, though. But never delivered even ONE machine. And then, conveniently, they went bust.
And not "very recently", but in August last year!

Psystar was very obviously an investment hoax and customer fraud.

Thanks so much to everyone for your help. This thread has gone a bit to far off-topic for me to keep following.

Thanks again for all the excellent info.

No, Athena: if you get a Mac you can run ALL your Windows software on it (and faster than on a Windows-box). Nothing needs to be replaced.

Looky here: Why your next PC should be a Mac.

It will not run faster and there are many other disadvantages to a Mac. Look, if you want to give advice, then do so from a neutral stance. If you wish to sell or advocate Apple product, there are other venues for you to do so. I've stood by and watched you spout lie upon lie about computers here and held my peace, but this is getting to be too much.

Give it a rest, OK?

"Lie upon lie", dad?
That's quite an accusation, sonny.

I've used PCs at work (public radio news) for over a decade and find that they work perfectly well. Of course, we have a house full of engineers to untangle things if there's trouble. At home, where I do all my photo stuff, we use Macs, and we love them. If you've never been to an Apple store, go. Go some mid-week evening when the crowds are thinner. Weekends can be zooish. You'll be amazed. They'll listen to your problems and advise you wisely. If you buy their stuff, they'll show you how to use it.I don't know of any other American company that markets its product and serves its customers as effectively as Apple does. But they're expensive. Full disclosure: I own a few shares of Apple stock. I've never worked a day for Apple. Twenty-two years ago, they suckered me into buying an excreble Apple II GS.

First post and glad to see this discussion since I am in the same boat.

I was thinking about purchasing the Macbook Pro 17 and running the 24" monitor. I figured that I would get the best of both worlds, a desktop and still have portability. I would also keep my PC for my kids, office tasks, and mild web development.

The main concerns I have is that I have to purchase CS4 again, also will the MBP be good enough as a main computer with out issues, (speed vs. a desk top, heat generation, etc.)?

I wish I could afford a Mac Pro also, but I am already up to 5K with tax on the MBP 17 and accessories.

For my little bit here. Try to find a local systems integrator in your neighbourhood and have a custom machine built. The reason I say this is because the typical off the shelf unit that you buy nearly allways takes some shortcuts in hardware quality to be able to sell at a competitive price. Where a local builder, typical one person shop, does not have all the overhead a mass producer has. For an example, my machine I built myself (working with computers for over 40 years), used a top of the line motherboard, Intel quad core processor, 4 gig ov menory, 1.5 terabyte of hard drive, etc. I have about $500 invested, including Vista ultimate.

I agree fully. We have three Dell PC's in our house as well as a Dell Laptop...and we LOVE all four. They work wonderfully and we've had no problems with any of them....except the Laptop...it came pre-installed from Dell with Vista. I formatted the drive, installed Windows XP and it's been running like a top ever since!

Mike - you are considering essentially what I will likely buy in a few months after we're moved. It would be fun to buy it now so I can travel with it, but I want to establish the relationship that will come from the help I will need changing platforms at the new location. So for the next few months at least it will be me and my PC laptop. I'll keep the desktop and let the kids have a go at it. But first I need to get all my data off of it!

Earlier I said the same thing and one fellow (at least) said you CAN side grade from Windows to a Mac. I know there is a menu selection in CS 4 to deactivate the product. Presumably, if you deactivated, then you can activate in Mac OS for either no cost or very little.

Had I been able to transfer my licenses from Win to Mac, we may be all Mac today. Because I got (wrong?) information from both companies implying I'd need to buy both products again, I am now in Win 7 and pretty happy with it. We also run a brand new Mac which I enjoy as well.

Probably if given my choice with no issues about software licenses, I'd go Mac over my Win 7 but it's not a run away choice. One thing I like about my Win is that I have a lot more flexibility in some ways.
