All,
Let us get back to helping the OP. She has a need and has asked relative merits of one system vs another. We should keep that in mind when responding. I've used both Windows and OS X systems. My current home system is OS X but not for any technical reasons. It was a knee jerk reaction to Windows Vista and the mess MS made of that. Most of the software I run can be ran under Windows, or an equal can be found. Windows has color management now and that is no longer an argument of one over the other. Both are using the same relative hardware (for the most part) thus hardware is no longer a driving consideration. Security and ease of use are the 2 key areas I think we should focus on. Relative merits aside, I find OS X easier on both counts. But make no mistake, I still practice VERY safe computing; I still run an A/V program (ClamX) to scan my emails and download folders and I still apply patches from Apple and 3rd party providers as needed. Bottom line is what does one like to use, how much money does one have to make a decision, and how much tinkering will one do to a system. I used to build my own, upgrade on a pretty regular basis and needed the openness of a Windows based PC. Don't do the upgrades like that any more so OS X suits my needs just as well. Take care, |

Well its been recommended by a few people now and I will recommend it to. I would go with a mac, you have the best of both worlds. You have the options of running windows in either bootcamp or run it in parallel. I run winxp on my macbook pro just fine. Xp can be found real cheap to. Then when you decide to upgrade or purchase new software you can get the mac versions or stay with windows. Your basically getting two for the price of one ........almost

. So you can, whatever the legal implications. But no, you cannot on every PC. |

Thanks Athena for starting this thread because I'm in the same boat as you.Something in my software has been damaged from my registry cleaner/repair programme and is causing me tons of grief now.
I have been through several computers over the years and have finally decided that a premium dell that's used just for for editing never to been connected to the internet is the way for me, I'll just run my old system for the net and use a stick to transfer images between them (for uploads) Maybe this would be a solution for you also Athena.. |

David - you need to be connected to the web to download your software updates... Or I guess you could download them to another machine and then transfer the files over? But that'd be a hassle.

Not to much of a hassle I wouldn't think just adobe and your camera firmware if your're just using it for pp .I really find the new jump drives quite easy.

If you run both Mac and Windows, but you'd need a Mac for that, you would only need that one machine...
If my Win7, Vista, or XP system – on my MacBook Pro – gets infected beyond repair, I can simply chuck it in the Trash and create/set up a completely new, clean system in a couple minutes. While that is installing in the background I continue working on MacOSX. Beats buying a new machine. |

You have convinced me. I am taking the PC outside and throwing it on the trash heap. I will not use any machine at home since I will have to pay a premium for a Mac but will use my work computer for all my personal stuff. The others might get fired doing that but you see, I am one of the senior partners so I can maybe get the firm to add windows to the mac and have a truly fast computer. Ahh, I see it now---paradise with the mac. Mel |

Actually there was and last week it declared bankruptcy. They were located in Florida and sold white box clones running OS X. Apple has been trying to sue them and the trial was supposed to start soon.
