I've used WinRAR for years but haven't revisited the competition for some time. Which compression tool do you use, and why?

Winrar for years (winzip didn't compress enough when winrar came out) and also haven't checked in on the competition as I'm still happy and can extract almost any file I've come across.

Sadly yes, used them for years as they could be command line driven in batch files etc. Now we use out own zip/unzip that we can call up from within our own software. The biggest advantage being super-duper encryption

The reason I started poking around with this again is that I could NOT open a zip file with WinRAR that was created with the super-duper compression of WinZip.

The one fault of WinZip tho is its lack of multi-threading support... Still only uses one core on multi-core systems, and that can make a big difference if you're zipping/unzipping LARGE files! (at least the version I have, which I think is the newest, only uses one core, correct me if I'm wrong!!)
And yes... PKUnzip... back in the day... lol |

Oh, and I've heard good things about 7-Zip... I hear it gets some pretty awesome compression ratios, never used it myself tho!

I've used RAR for years because I was doing a lot of data transmission on Sat MiniM sytems at 9600baud the extra compression could save a lot of money at $10/min.
I've been happy with it since and never thought of moving back to ZIP |

99% of the time I simply use the built-in (Windows) zipping (it's a simple right-click) - when I need to break up the archive into multiple files I use WinRAR.

I use 7-Zip exclusively. It can open and extract both Zip, PkZip, WinZip, WinRar, Unix Gz, Unix Tar, as well as a huge list of other compressions. In my experience its' about 25-50% faster than Windows Zip. The other main reason is that 7z seems to be a better compression algorithm == smaller files. It's open format, yay! AND most importantly you have options for "password", level of compression, as well as other options when creating the compressed file.
And Yes, I'm also old enough to remember the command line version os pkzip and pkunzip. |

Now for the really old:
Who remembers PKArc and PKXArc? __________________
