Default Photo Sorting

Just a quick question...what does everyone here use for sorting and naming photos....I waste WAY too much time trying to name all my shoots....Trial and error? what's YOUR favorite program?

First, I moved this from General, because I think you are talking about software based things...if not, let me know.

If I got a whole set of images, and want a "special" name for them all, I batch rename them using Irfanview, which is free.

For a cheapo catalog type program, so you can find all them pictures, you can use Picasa by Google. It is part of the Google Pack, or you can get it all by itself (pack.google.com).

There are a bazillian types of these out there, but these two will get you going, and cost nothing. Irfanview does a whole lot fo other stuff too, and it is a great tool to have.

I dump them in folders by date or specific event, and sift through them in Adobe Photoshop CS's Filebrowser or Windows Explorer. I don't bother renaming the individual photos, but I do attach extra letters/words to indicate changes I've made (i.e. "t" for "touched", "_grey" for greyscale, etc.).

That's pretty much exactly what I do. I use Adobe Bridge... not because it's the best, but because I really just don't want to deal with several image browsing programs. I use Windows Explorer to create the new folder and copy the files from the CF card. I name the folders but not the files. I always keep the original filename as part of my working file names.

For the most part, I just use the operating system and create directories and change names as necessary. I have a convention for denoting changed images. I used to rename everything manually according to subject but that became too awkward.
