You will find that it is more than an update/upgrade of Vista, and I don't mean that in a wholly positive way. While the OS is better than Vista, it also breaks a fair number of applications--and this you will no doubt learn. And in some cases--Directory Opus comes to mind--formerly fine-running applications will break Windows 7.

I'm going to load up my apps one by one and see what happens. Fortunately I do not have Directory Opus.

BTW: it is now available again for download from the original site Welcome to Windows 7

A key is still being provided at this time.

I went through that, got my key, and hit download it just spins the hour glass for a sec and then stops. Had to get the .iso through other means. Going to run it in a virtual environment after it's done downloading, see how it goes.

There's a download manager that it asks you if you want to install. Install it. It makes the process easier, and you can then download both the 32- and 64-bit versions at once.

Well, I downloaded the 32 and 64 bit versions, but not sure what (or if) machine to install it on. I'm afraid my main system is the only one fast enough to run it, but I don't want to risk messing it up.

Did you dual boot or overwrite your existing? Will it dual boot without having to re-partition your drive? What about uninstalling? Can you and is it easy?

You only need about 20gb partition on your boot drive. If you are using Vista it will have a partition manager built into it otherwise you'll need something like Partition Magic.

I would NOT use it as my main OS as after August 1st you will lose everything you did unless Microsoft decide to release the final version as an upgrade from the beta which they are currently saying isn't their plan.

I have Vista, but partitioning a drive is always risky. I wonder if it will run on my Athlon 850?

I've got it downloaded, but not installed yet. I'm thinking of installing it on my laptop b/c there's nothing mission critical on my laptop. Everything on it is backed up on my main pc and other than that I just have some movies and such. I read an article (don't remember where it was tho) on the web about a guy that installed 7 on his computer that did not meet the minimum requirements, and it works perfectly. For those using vista, as a reference his numbered "base score" for graphics and games and such was a 1.0. I currently have XP on the laptop, and meet minimum (BARE minimums) for vista, so I might give it a go... we'll see...

Y'all know how I can get a key tho? I already have it downloaded and didn't get the key there, but now when I go to the site and hit download it only gives me a moving circle thing...

The page with the download button that you were supposed to print out had the key on it.

I figured it out. I wasn't even making it to that page with the download button. I use Opera as my main browser, apparently you need to use Internet Explorer. I downloaded it using a direct link to the ISO file so I could avoid the mess yesterday.

Got my key now, so maybe the install will commence later tonight (I'm at work with the laptop right now, we'll see about doing it later)

I'll have to check my laptop...it might actually meet the requirements listed (I can't remember how much memory it has). I'm sure the video is lacking for the aero part of it though.

My laptop MIGHT run the aero part, but I'll probably turn it off anyways b/c it would more than likely be very sluggish... as a reference... my laptop has a Pentium M processor running at 1.8 GhZ, 512MB RAM, Intel Mobile Graphics Adapter, and a 40gb HDD. If I decide to try it out, I'll let y'all know how it goes. Does anyone know if lightroom works in 7? That and Opera are about the main two programs I use on the laptop... and Office, but I'm sure that won't have a problem since it is Windows...

I'm running Vista x64 and the EOS Utility works fine, at least the remote shooting part of it. That's all I ever use so I don't know if there's another part that doesn't work.

I find it difficult to believe that Vista has been optimized enough to run on a machine like that with any sort of speed. Probably won't even give you the option for Aero. I did a test install on a slightly faster machine of windows server 2008 (which is supposed to be similar to 7 in terms of speed) and it ran unacceptably slow.

I'm downloading it, but it's because I'll be supporting clients who use it. I've completely lost faith in Microsoft's ability to release even half decent software. Perhaps I'm cynical, but this comic illustrates how most techs feel
