Does anyone use one of the free antivirus programs out there? Would love to hear your opinion on which one is best. I've been using McAfee for a long time, and I've had so many problems with it lately that I'm wondering whether a free program might not be better.

The free version of AVG seems to work quite well for me. I found the link on the Kim Komando web site.

After some research, I loaded the trial version of Bitdefender. I know it's only free for a while, but its footprint is so small and it has already found viruses that other scanners missed that I just might pony up some money for a while.
I was reminded of the value of this software yesterday whan a virus got onto my computer and slowed everything to a standstill. The only thing that saved me was system restore. |

I was hit by a virus on my laptop yesterday as well... I used a comination of McAffee Enterprise, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (which is free) and Hijack This to get it off. MBAM is pretty good, but you can only scan with it, it doesn't have real-time protection on the free version. Hijack This is a good analyzing tool, but you really need to know your way around your system's registry to use it safely. Although there are a number of sites that you can post the log it creates to and they'll tell you what to do from there. I think I finally got my system clean using those tools though.

I personally use Avira Antivir Personal which is free....there is a annoying nag screen which pops up once a day, but it can be disabled pretty easily.....(google is your friend). See the AV-Comparatives site for a head to head of all of the AV programs....

"Avast" antivirus home edition
I use it and my customers use it, we are all happy and virus free Couple it with "SpyBot" and you'll be in business While you're at it use "CCleaner" to fix your registry once in a while Also "Diskeeper Lite" to defragment your hard drive All of the above are free programs that work great. |

I'm going to second what spystyle said about CCleaner; a great little program that is free, although you can make a donation to help support them. CCleaner use to be called Crap Cleaner, and it does a good job of removing all the crap that builds up. I use it weekly and routinely remove about 1GB of junk.....

I've been using Panda Antivirus. Although it's not free, it's not outrageously priced.
It's done well for me. |

I've never tried it but I've seen this type of thread come up in different forums. AVG always gets high marks.
The general consensus seems to be that it is the most popular free antivirus. (Though personally I'll continue to use Avast) Just an observation. |
