Default Tethered Shooting with Vista Home premium

Picked up a nice laptop to be used with any tethered shooting for my Rebel Xt. Set up all my Canon Software and did the updates. Opened DPP then the EOS Utility. No good. Can't even read my card let alone shoot tethered. OK, Driver missing for Vista. Went to Canons web site and couldn't find a driver for the Vista Home 64 bit. Said they didn't offer one or my software would do without it. Nope, it didn't do anything without it.

Wrote to canons tech support. They said that there is no driver for Vista 64 bit and that they didn't plan on having one. Well now, what am I to do now?

Is there ways to instal software at 32 bit and have it run like that or do you need to reboot the entire operating system? I need to find a way for this to work.

Any suggestions?

The software runs in 32-bit mode but the drivers access the hardware through a kernel mode API. There is no interpreter at that level for 32 to 64-bit translation since it's bypassing the interpreter layers.

Virtual machines don't work either for USB port access.

You're stuck.

Your card should be able to be read via a card reader but not directly off the camera itself. Tethered won't work at all.

You could set up a dual boot system or contact the PC manufacturer and ask for a 32-bit license to swap your 64-bit system. You'd need to re-install everything, though.

Thanks Brian, That's what I was afraid of.

Is there a software program out there that would work? Something other then DPP with the EOS Utility?

I just checked DSLR Remote Pro, which is a fairly common replacement, but it doesn't support the 64-bit OS either. It still uses the Canon drivers so you're back to the same problem.

Sorry. From what I read during a Google search, you're not the only one having problems. Nikon is running into the same problem as well.

That's pretty much what I have found too Brian. Thanks for checking it out. Been doing some reading where I may just install a Virtual Operating System. I can use XP or Linex. Just hate having to do something that takes space and power.

Canon and Nikon are running into the same problem. Isn't this their problem by not developing a driver for the 64 bit systems?

FYI: virtual operating systems don't play well with hardware ports. It's unlikely that you'll be able to solve the issue with it.

Not really. It's a long story but it boils down to Microsoft's continued effort for backward compatibility and allowing hardware vendors to access the kernel (heart of the operating system) directly rather than through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Canon and Nikon are hardly alone in this. Lots of printers don't work with 64-bit Vista either. Anything with a "kernel mode driver" won't work properly without rewritten drivers. Anything using the API level drivers will be fine, since the OS will do the interpreting for it.

Some manufacturers have written new drivers for the 64-bit OS. Some had drivers that were built into the new Windows prior to distribution and didn't have to worry about it afterward.

For Canon, there really isn't a monetary reason to go back to a 20D or any other non-production camera and write new drivers for it. Someone might but I would be surprised if it actually came from Canon.

Microsoft's Virtual PC doesn't even list my operating system as one it supports. others have written that everything works fine though. If I can get a Virtual operating system installed I may not have something useless on my hands. otherwise i have a 1200 dollar box of junk. So, I am guessing that trying something is better then not. I have a disk of XP I will try on it. I think in the end I will have that expensive box of junk.

I may have to look at it and just wipe everything off of it but still I think that whatever goes in it will be 64 bit no matter what.

VirtualPC2007, VirtualBox. They didn't work. One better then the other but in the end didn't work.

VMWARE worked. Finally. Drivers work and all with XP in VMWARE. Can even work cross platform with ease.

Now, anyone want to tell me how to set things up to get a full screen review instead of thumbnails.

Thanks all
