I hate computers!

Just a rant:

Stuck some RAM in a desktop and the desktop started smoking. Now it won't start. Apparently the RAM I used was rated too fast for the puter. Now I have to rebuild another PC. I hate computers.

At home in the family I have to maintain about four notebook computers and two desktops. There's *always* something going wrong--software, wireless, e-mail, viruses, spyware, malware, worms, hardware issues. It's just ridiculous.

Maybe I'm not praying enough to Bill Gates and Intel. I don't know.

I upgraded my computer last night. A noticable improvement, though it does run a little hotter than before.

There comes a point when you seem to spend as much time maintaining the stupid things as using them. Depends on your definition of maintaining, of course, but every move you make leads to other issues. It's a domino effect.

Upgrade your camera? Woops. The RAW format isn't recognized. New software. New software conflicts with something else. More hardware leads to unforeseen problems. Wireless upgrade takes forever, and now stuff doesn't connect right all the time. LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. If it works, don't fix it.

Oh, and have you heard? Vista will make everything better, easier.

Wait, didn't someone say that about XP? 2000? ME? 98SE? 98? 95? 3.1? DOS 6.0?

Jeez.

And now you know why I got out of IT and into photography.

I cannot convey the pleasure of becoming simply... a user. It was a first for me, I got into computers from the support side so until I became a photographer, I had never just used a computer without it being related to supporting computers.

Truer words were never spoken. I'm about to add memory to my edit computer and it worries the hell out of me that I have enough info to get the exact right modules... there were two mainboards for my particular workstation configuration and I have to break it open just to ascertain which one I have... Dell doesn't have the service tag on record anymore.

I was known as a high tech Luddite when working as a DIT... people just couldn't understand my reluctance to jump on whatever cutting edge crap somebody mentioned on NPR that week. I was accused of being obstructionist.

Working tech support for a cow spotted brand of computers I'm not allowed to name I came to wonder if computers were actually worth it. They certainly cause more stress than they remove. Sometimes you really do feel as if they must be made of laminated paper rather than metal and plastic. I've been out of tech support for years now and happy to have let almost all the knowledge leak from my brain (saves room so I can memorize Pi and learn Japanese )

I put RAM in upside down(years back) once while in a hurry with no flashlight. Turned on the machine and got that lovely burning smell/smoke. I am now a little more careful.
