Default Amber Road eliminates RAID = fast & easy

Sun Microsystems has completely discarded RAID volume management in its new Amber Road storage boxes, released today. Because it uses the Zettabyte File System, the Amber Roads have eliminated the use of RAID arrays, RAID controllers and volume management software — meaning that it's very fast and easy to use.

I was considering a couple Drobo's, but this one bears watching, imo.

Don't throw away your current RAID array just yet kids, pricing for "Amber Road" starts at about $11,000 for the 2TB version. Yikes!

Oops!

OTOH, it may be half that in a year's time!

Because don't forget that that's the premium price right now! It's also the signal for the competition to shift into a higher gear and heat up considerably! And that equals price pressure all around!

I am satisfied with SATA RAID, I take it you aren't if you find this so interesting?

What are you running for hard drives?

I have a fast* 500 GB RAID 0 array for my primary drive and a 400 GB RAID 0 via external USB for monthly backups.

*WD2500AAKS for the price are blazing fast.

Cheers,
Craig

I have a second gen Drobo and I love it. Exceptionally easy to use. Now that Drobo has a developer's kit, people are starting to produce apps that will run on the box.

I use a server -- two, actually -- to back up my photos. That way, I'm limited only by the number of SATA ports on the motherboards. I don't care for any of these external storage devices because they're too expensive and offer capacities that I quickly outgrow.
