Free software to help you find duplicate digital photos

Digital photographs can consume a lot of disk space in no time at all, so you’re wise to think about weeding out duplicates from time to time. While there’s no tool built in to Windows that can help, there are some able free and low-cost solutions available for download. What you want to look for in any duplicate file remover is the ability to search not only for duplicate file names but, more importantly, for duplicate contents.

Clone Cleaner Lite (Heatsoft Clone Cleaner - Welcome) is a free program that will scan any drive or folder and present you with a list of duplicates. Once located, you can view the duplicates to make sure the program has not made a mistake, and then you can choose to delete the duplicates from within the application. A commercial Pro version of the software has a few more tricks up its sleeve, such as the ability to exclude certain subfolders from its search and the option to move rather than delete duplicates.

Duplicate file finders differentiate themselves largely by how many file types they can scan accurately and the options you have once duplicates are located. Well-known programs such as NoClone (ReasonableNoClone 2007 - Find and remove true duplicate files, similar files and duplicate Outlook emails) and Duplicate File Remover (http://www.duplicatefileremover.com) claim to be able to locate duplicates of any type and offer ways that you can recover deleted files if you find you’ve made a mistake when deleting something.

I am about put all of my backup images onto the hdd's and sort them out ready for a big cull
Using one of these to get rid of duplicates once they are all on the hdd's will make my job of sorting a lot easier.

Have some K for making my life just that bit easier.

The best app to find duplicate digital photos i've ever faced is Clone Remover. The best app for duplicates i think. Very recommend.

I tried 'Clone Cleaner Lite' and while it was fast, it was totally useless for the images taken by my wife who's camera restarts the image number from the beginning when you empty the card.
It finds duplicate file names, great, there are plenty of those that I know are different images, and by file size, as she always shoots at the same resolution there are plenty that are the same size but different images, while all these different images are in different folders there are plenty that are duplicated and both search methods are useless in this situation.
What I need to find is one that will compare the actual file structure or the even just the time stamp in the exif.

I thought I was the only one with clutered duplicates on a mass of hard drives. So who said film and prints were expensive! I think the jokes on us..

So glad that I found this thread... I have just cleaned up my system and made a start by moving every single photograph from 3 hard drives to 1. Now that hard drive contains all sorts of duplicates (plus duplicates with different file names). I am going to try these links and let you know how I get on.

An excellent FREE application I use is Dup Detectoractually compares pixels, not just file names, so you can use it to find small or large versions of files as well. It does take a while, as it creates a file list, than runs again to either compare within that list or with another list. There are several customizations such as how similar the files are (on a percentage basis) and auto-deletion, etc.
