Default Wireless milestone

From PC Mag:

On those rare occasions when you come across a technology that blows the doors off its predecessors, ya gotta take an in-depth look. After firing up the latest-generation wireless routers from Linksys and Netgear, we're still searching the Labs for door fragments.

The Airgo Networks True MIMO Gen3 chipset is responsible for the carnage. I tested two wireless routers based on it, and the results were amazing. Real-world TCP throughput for both the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX400 and the Netgear RangeMax 240 hit over 103 Mbps(!) with a 10-foot separation between the access point and the PCs (laptops, in this case).

Suddenly your 100-Mbps wired Fast Ethernet network has become the bottleneck for local traffic. Granted, this blazing performance drops off with distance, but at 60 feet, both of the routers we tested still managed throughput close to that of Fast Ethernet. And even at 160 feet, we got bet-ter than 20 Mbps—a significant improvement over the roughly 10-Mbps max of the fastest previous technology.

Whoa. That's serious throughput, I'm assuming it's switched... FE rarely makes the 100Mbps spec in the real world. That will be well worth an upgrade for anybody using wireless nets.

Chip

Ps. JD, I think I referred to you as Paul in that cell phone thread... my humble apologies.

That's perfect timing. I'm looking at beefing up the wireless side of the network but have been waiting for some real world stories of MIMO. Will MIMO survive when the standard is ratified though?

Well, actually they are one and the same. I mean, have you ever seen the two of them together

Well, now that you mention it I haven't. But I just thought that was the security thing where you two have to stay separated so in case of a plane or space shuttle crash, one would remain to keep Don from using the Camel to take over the world. :
