Help switching back to 8 bit - PhotoCamel

Hi. I hope someone can help me. I have photoshop elements 3 and all of a sudden all my photos are opening as 16 bit and I have to change them via mode to 8 bit before I can do any work on. I must have hit something and have no way of knowing how to change it back. Any one with any suggestions?

Are you shooting raw files? Doing the conversion with Adobe Camera Raw? There's something (depends on the version of ACR you have) at the middle and bottom of the ACR dialog that allows you to change your develop settings. Try looking there.

If that's not it, we'll need more info from you.
