Kinda funny like the Ce Me NT gag.
I have had windows Vista for a while, I did a self install I have it set to run for maximum speed instead of looks. Never signed into messenger, use AVG for viruses. Not one crash, I actully like the interface better than XP. But it isn't a company built crap, like a dell. I installed it myself on a freshly formated HD. |

Funny, and not far from the truth, either... their customer support is the pits until you decide to flash large amounts of $$$ in front of them...

That was funny. I want to order a new computer but the only company I can find that still offers XP is Dell and I'm not a fan of theirs. I guess I will have to go to a local shop and have one custom built.

We had to use a Vista machine as a network hub while one of the studio workstations was in the shop.
.....Vista wouldn't run one of the network printers, or a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, CONTSTANT crashes, couldn't use the OS's onboard FTP or my lab's FTP to backup studio data. Even with a 160 gb scratch disc, and 2 gigs of memory & it took CS2 almost 4 minutes to start up on Vista, and ran slow when it did. The new Start menu made it difficult to find installed programs. Upside..... there was some cool interace features, networking was a snap. |

I run vista everyday for 10-12 hours strait. never crashed once. (knocks on wood) I also have it on a custom built machine. I use to also work on computers. I know MS anything is not the best but alot of the time the user is to blame. To run a computer and keep it running you really need to be smarter than it is. I have had people pay me $75/hr to come to their house and show them how to hook up their brand new computer. After I would get done I would show them the paper that generally came with the computer that shows where to plug in the pretty color coded wires. I think everyone should have a computer. But if you're going to make that large of an investment....
Learn how to use it! |

I agree 100%. I often get calls myself from other photographers asking very basic computing/digital imaging questions.
BUT.... Why release an OS that won't run basic software or periferals? |

Wait what which ones. I didn't have one problem with any of my older programs/ periphials (I have an epson 1270 printer). If you did 64 bit vista, yeah you will have problems with some non 64 bit programs, but that is true in Mac os or Vista. BTW here is my custom built Computer (Note before I finalized he wire routing and tied it up): ![]() I think also there is alot to be said about a basic windows install vs a windows install with all the dell/gateway/comaq bloat ware added on to make your computer "idiot proof" this is basic malware that does more harm than good. |

Nice!!!!! And i couldnt agree more. Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, etc install programs that are not used by alot of the people that buy a pc from them just because they get a kick back from the people who sell the programs. Have you ever bought a pc thats design by any of the above and not see a desktop full of apps(app)? Then you start it up and you have a taskbar full of apps running. Then when the computer crashes everyone is quick to blame Windows. The biggest money maker for me was fixing peoples computers by disabling the 30-40 apps in the start up that was not needed. Want to really screw up a good set up? Install AOL. The most widely used dial-up and now does broadband actually customizes settings on your computer that a "ISP" application has no business doing. Oh and I have never had problems installing any application on Vista. I have no problem with Mac, Linux or any other OS. I run windows becasue alot of games, apps, plug-in are not made for the above listed OS. |

Torlough,
The processor is an AMD Turion 64x2. 2 gigs Ram. The system is about 6 months old. The wireless keyboard/Mouse in question is the Logitech EX 110. When inserting the CD, Vista gives the message ...."Software will not run on this system". Upon returning it to the retailer, the clerk told me...."oohhh, you need the Visa Ready version of this keyboard". A Vista and non-Vista version of the same keyboard??At the SWPPA convention, I visited with the girls from Photodex about my version of Producer that Vista wouldn't let me upgrade. While the new version of Producer will run on Vista, there's a tweak you have to make first. (I have to call them for a tech to run me through the process this week). The upgrade will not install or run otherwise according to Photodex. Let me clarify......it would not install or run on my Vista system. I also have ProShow Gold. After installing the serial number to register/unlock the software, the program will ask you to install the serial number every time you start the software. According to Photodex, the same Vista tweak fixes both problems. The printer in question was an older Epson, but I do not know which model. Mischi threw it out after we couldn't get the driver to install on Vista. That week she saw the Mac commercial with the PC guy that says'...."if your printer is incompatable with Vista...get a new printer". I had no idea some printers were "incompatible" with Vista. Never had any trouble with any OS/printer combination before. |

hmmm....I have proshow producer and it runs like a charm on my machine. I also have a Logitech keyboard that came off my XP machine. Still no problems. Heres my thoughts tho if I can be honest for a minute.
I think its funny how people expect to just run all their old programs, use their old printers, scanners, etc from one windows to the next. I know we spend alot of money on computers but just like anything after a few years it is outdated and in need on being replaced. I am not sure what everyone else uses their PC's for. I use my for just about everything work and play retlated. I also update my computer, software, and anything connected to it every 3 months if not sooner depending on what I think it needs. Its like a car. You don't have to do the routine maitnance on it. But its strongly suggested. And after a few years you can't take the engine, headlights, tailights off your old car and put it on your new one even if it is the same make and model On that keyboard you bought. I think they might of meant you need the windows vista drivers. Alot of keyboards from many manufacturs was sent out before the release of Vista without a Vista driver. I don't buy my computer parts from people at "Big name computer store here" because they are most likely very under trained. I only go to what I would consider a mom and pops place becasue they only sell computers and I know they didn't get pulled from the appliance department to fill in for another person who called in or is on lunch. On the proshow producer. Who was the girls at the SWPPA convention? Are they programmers, sellers, etc etc? I am just curious because I know alot of times they also use girls to get your attention. ...lol just my opinion. I know opinion are like buttholes (can i say that word?) and sometime mine stinks ![]() P.S. After going to the Logitech website I am sure thats what they meant. They have software for every Windows before Vista. Then they have software just for Vista. |

Oh IC the AMD is probably part of your problem. When I was building mine (I used to have an AMD) I found out that Intel now has the better chip for the buck. I tried the Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 and it hasn't given me any problems. As for the other stuff so far in my experience I haven't had problems. Bought a new wired Msoft k board for less than 15$ and it works like a charm.. I use pro show gold also but didn't have a problem. did you upgrade from XP to vista? When did you install vista.

Vista works better with some processors than others? I had no idea. Is it a big difference in performance? Is it worth upgrading the motherboard and processor?
Our main workstation is back from the shop....it's an HP with the Intel Viiv 2.8 ghz / 2 gigs ram / XP. Life is good. I didn't. It came OEM on the computer. It's about 6 months old. I bought it as a backup unit, and out of curiosity about the OS. I'm currently running 4 studio workstations with XP, 1 with Vista. Quote:
BTW...I'd be happy to post Photodex's resolution to the problem after I get it working. Another issue I have with Vista: It sees a simple Java Script password access box on the Customers Area on my website as a virus, or malicious code. I know it's not a virus, because I edited the script personally. It's been there for over 10 years. Vista's overzealousness is great at protecting the system from phishing or malicious code on websites. In this case, it sees a simple password Java Script as malicious. It doesn't even give the user the option to proceed or not. If your running Vista, you cannot proceed to the Customers Area on my website, unless I send the client a link directly. The Java Script password boxs works flawlessly on IE, (all versions), Firefox, Netscape on any OS except Vista, and Safari on Mac. So far, I haven't found another script that Vista will ignore to allow my clients access to the Customers Area, ...but I'm not a super webmaster either. Still looking for alternatives. If you guys have or know of a Java Script password set that will allow Vista access, I'm all ears. |

I agree about AOL in general... it sucks. My moms computer took forever to boot up and to just open an IE window would take about a minute and a half. She was on DSL and running AOL. I finally convinced her to let me test a few things on it and once I turned off a lot of garbage in the start up window it ran like a champ. We did two tests, one with AOL enabled and one without, she couldn't believe how responsive her computer was with it turned off.

If you want to increase speed and performance I will recomend the following. First uninstall McGafee or Norton or whatever big name top heavy bloat ware OEM antivirus that was pre installed. I would do a little research on uninstalling these things, if you are not tech savy or patient then it might not be worth it. I know that Noton digs into your OS lick a tick. Then install two programs: 1 - AVG get the pro version has firewall (turn of windows its usless) and a great antivirus program. AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads 2 - Tune Up Uilities 2008. This one has all your utilities. Best is the start up you can go in and decide what you really want in the start up, if you have I tunes do you really need Quicktime in your start up?? Stuff like that. You can turn of all the HP Hel and HP logging crap, it mess with performance too TuneUp America - TuneUp Utilities 2008 Seriously I think it is more of the fact you got Vista on an OEM computer that you bought from a company. Use thes on the XP machines and you will see the performance ncrease. How many Icons do you have in the lower left start bar? __________________
