I didn't have a good feeling when I first heard this news, and I see now that John Dvorak agrees:

I'm inclined to agree with you and Dvorak. Sun screwed up StarOffice, which was better than OpenOffice prior to Sun's acquisition. And, as Dvorak mentioned would happen with MySQL, OpenOffice began getting StarOffice's major community development time and surpassed it in quality and popularity.

Good assessment by Dvorak. Anything that Sun touches simply dies. I'm surprised they aren't dead yet themselves.

I tend to agree with all that has been said. Who knows, (Sun) may remake themselves in SCO's image. [\dry humor off]

Well, the scary thing is that MySQL is free and is used on millions of web sites around the world (including this one). So if it turns not free, things will change in a hurry.

The MySQL-alternate community will come to the rescue very fast on that one. It would not surprise me to see some beginning to that alternate version very, very soon.
